Hi all
We will be in
Mildura on Tuesday week and are than going to follow the
Murray river east.
I am just chasing some info and tips for catching Murray Cod or any other fresh
water species there(Even a big stinking mongrel carp would make the kids day).
I don't have a boat so l will be land based all the time.
I have done stuff all fresh
water fishing so any useful advice would be great e.g Baits, Lures ect.
Cheers

you should be able to find
places that sell worms and yabbies for bait.
the worms should work real good for the carp and yella belly.
fish the worms on a 1/0-2/0 hook with a 1 or 2 foot leader below a sinker to match the flow[joke] and you should be right. Them big carp will give the kids a work out. good luck

You can have fun catching carp - I wouldn't eat one though.
They get pretty big there and fight a bit.
Bread makes good bait, and using smaller hooks maybe you'll even get onto a trout. Maybe.
Sinker and about 18 inch leader and fish on the bottom.
Have fun

Actually fishing the Murray requires a NSW license.
Even if you fish from the Victoria bank.

Yeah, it's our river :-) LOL LOL
I was always led to believe the waterline on the Vic side is the border.
Good to see a Dad taking the kids fishing. Good luck.

We went up to to the Murray last week end the SIL bought a NSW fishing license so I read rules on the way up, the one I didn't know is that if you catch a fish then
cook it close to the river you can be finned, but you can
cook carp and red fin.

I know that is illegal to release a carp back into the
water, if you pull one out.
Whether you decide to eat it or not, is up to you. If anyone has, I'd be keen to hear from you.
I think both carp and redfin are classified as noxious and as such don't come under the same rules as common table fish, but I stand to be corrected.
Fred.

G'day Just Going.
Did some fishing in the Murray in May, the only bait that was successful was tasty cheese.
Cheers,
Barry

that cheese thing is true. We fished down at
Echuca at
Easter and a local gave us some cheese to try. it worked, caught some small ones but the kids loved it.

Hubby just reminded me to mention that the same local gave us some chicken chippies to and they also worked (you know, the frozen ones like nuggets).
"On Patrol and TONI" - no red or white wine but hubby sure did have a few beers handy that day.

Seems that you have all the good oil on the gear and things you will need, but you wont need a boat, you will be able to walk out where ever you like and fish, or BYO
water !!!

I used to use a mixture of bread,
water, cotton wool and cheese to make up my bait for fishing in the murrumbidgee for cod and card etc. worked a treat because the cotton wool would make it difficult for the fish to get the bait off the hook.
Caught some good fish on this formulae......good luck

Hi Just going,
Find a nice spot and cast just down stream of a snag. Use worms and a spin outfit with a running sinker rig and sit and wait.
Its a basic outfit but it'll work(if they are co-operating) and its a lot of fun
Cheers Wilko

g'day
if your kids are like
mine they get bored after a short time of drowning a worm. i have found that a couple of cheap spinner baits from k-mart or the like, keeps them keen, as they are always pulling the worm in just to see if it is still there anyway.spinnerbaits are pretty snagproof and there is always the chance that some unlucky fish will grab it,then the kid will be hooked.
good luck with the fishin'
