Great Central road

I have been offered an opportunity to take a load of steel from Perth to Alice Springs.
going via the great central road will save me approx 2180 km on a return trip but only about 10 hrsaccording to whereis.com.
My question is could I take a half loaded semi through there at this time of the year rather than going via SA.
Regards Evan

Hi Evan,

Short answer is, yes you can.

The communities out there are supplied out of Perth with Road Trains pulling two trailers, fuel is brought in with triples.

Cheers,
Dennis

Yeah I reckon you can

I went through a few years ago and the road is great, but it gets a little rough past the WA border into the NT.

Check for conditions at Laverton before you go through and avoid it if it's been raining, as it floods pretty quickly

A lot lof work has been done on the road over the past few years. Mamy stretches of would only need a lick of bitumen to be all weather. It is badly corrugated around the NT/WA border and the environs of Docker River. Some loose sand in the 200 km from Docker to Yulara. Just be sure to check the weather as if there's any rain, your 10 hour trip may turn into two weeks.

Cheers Mick

Hi Evan
The Great Central Road for much of the way is a true Highway. Just ask yourself one question, how do all the communities out there get there fuel and food supplies? - all from Perth in Road Trains. The only section that is not as good as the greater part is east of Warakurna and through the Docker River Area, but still no problems when dry.

You will have no problems at. You will get a great feed at Tjukayirla and say G'Day to Andrew. The cheapest place for fuel is Laverton and Tjukayirla and Yulara.

It is a great drive and will save you from coming the long way round.

Cheers

Stephen

I was through that GCR from the junction of the Heather Highway to the Olgas about 4 weeks ago. By and large the road is in good condition. The section between the Olgas and Docker River is more corrugated than the rest but still accessible at 80kph min for a semi.
