I have just installed a couple of computer fans at the top of the fridge enclosure in our van in an attempt to increase the efficiency during hot weather. My question is : Where is the best place to locate the temperature switch? At the moment I have it resting on the top of the evaporator unit and the fans run continuously !

I have mine attached to the 'hot' pipe.

Experiment moving it along the pipe to find the best spot.

I bent over the first (from the R/H side, looking at it) fin on the condenser unit.
Drilled 2 hole to match the thermo switch and screw fixed it that way.
The fans cycle, more so now since I moved them from behind the vent to directly below the condenser.
I did this because when the fans were running they were also drawing hot flue gas into the cavity adding to the heat. (the chimney has an open back to prevent wind gusts blowing down the flue and extinguishing the flame)
Now they simply draw cool air up from the bottom (inlet) vent, blow it through the condenser fins and out through the top vent.

where did you hear this big furphy "the chimney has an open back to prevent wind gusts blowing down the flue and extinguishing the flame"? that is furphy flea manure

you can buy and should be fitted a proper chimney kit. under no circumstances is the chimney supposed to exhaust into the fridge cavity. the only reason why it is like that is because the fridge was not fitted correctly originally

Hi, Regards the position of the fans ( there has been a lot of disscussion on this) we have done some testing and found that blowing the hot air out the top vent worked better than sucking cold in the bottom and it stopped the hot air blowing in the van around the fridge etc, it sucks any hot air etc from around the fridge as well as the flue.
with mine I have it manualy switched and only need to turn it on when the wind is from the door side, realy makes a difference to the efficiency of the unit.
Cheers Des.

Paul.
The flue vent as fitted to our van is an angled tube, about 30* from horizontal which fits on top of the flue outlet from the boiler flue.
It is part of the Dometic fridge installation kit.
It directs the hot gas to the vent (that little compartment on the R/H side of the main vent) but is open ended to the other end, as I said to prevent wind gusts blowing the gas dame out.
I closed the end off to see what would happen. The gas flame went out from the gusting wind.
Self explanatory.
Dont worry about the "furphy crap", you are full off it.
Why comment on things you have no idea about,eh?
We are on here to help, not to suffer your rubbish.

I suspended my thermo switch just above the condenser fins so that it was not touching any of the fin metal, thus stopping any heat being transfered to the switch by physical contact. This allows the switch to work of the ambient temp in the rear of the fridge cavity.
Our fans do cycle as required and I have put in an in line manual switch so that we can turn the fans off manually.
And yes some types of chimneys fitted to the 3 way fridges that vent the heat via the top plastic grid do have a rear opening, I just blocked the rear part off with a piece of steel wool which stops the fans from drawing any warm/hot air from this part.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
