Actually this is MalcolmC from
Townsville ....
The mighty Nissan Patrol has done it to me again.... We left
Townsville yesterday planning to arrive
St George on Saturday afternoon, drop the CT and head for
Brisbane on Sunday. Swap the Patrol for the D-MAX on Monday and head back to join you all at
St George.
Well when it comes to reunions and get togethers it seems I'm always breaking down .... thanks to this Patrol.
20km short of Belyando Crossing on the
Gregory Development Rd, traveling nicely around 95km/hr (no OD) (3000RPM - EGT 450C) and suddenly the engine just cut out. SSlipped into Neutral and tried restart whilst coasting but had to pull off to side of road at
Tank Creek.
Just knew it was electrical. Disconnected battery for 20 mins to reset ECU. No. Removed Fuel filter and drained. Reprimed to hard. No. Thanks to all the people that stopped - even the trucky on Ch40 who said to his mate, "How many of those things you see broken down on the side of the road!". Finally admitted defeat and accepted offer of lift 20km into Belyando Crossing - still no mobile coverage - even with country phones and extended aerial. &*^(*) Rang RACQ on pay phone. Sent truck 180km from Charters Towers. They say they can't do anything until MONDAY - all going to the sky show in
Townsville. :-( Recovery drive was a terrific
young lad, 1st year apprentice, he now has main battery on charger. I asked why not just try a jumper lead or change the battery for a fully charged one - seems the main battery may be DEAD - still shows 12.4V. Aux battery is still running our 40l Engel as a freezer in the back of Patrol. Last time I looked it was -13V hope it holds that for a while.
RACQ has been fantastic - Put us up in Cattlemans Rest Motel until we find out more.
Will post more as/when we know.

Hi Bob
What is wrong with yours ?
The motel was good. Great steak last night and a glass of "Church Block" something or other that went down very smoothly. (after the dozen or so XXXX during the day, purely for medicinal purposes) LOL.

Thanks Steve
RACQ did a "recovery" for us back to
Townsville this morning. Locals are getting used to seeing this Patrol come home on the back of an RACQ truck. LOL.
I'm doing a bit of diagnostics myself this afternoon to try to find out what has happened before they take it to the Nissan dealer tomorrow.
Still hoping to make "at least part" of the reunion.
See what tomorrow brings.
Again very happy with service from RACQ ( We did increase our
membership to Ultimate as soon as they released it this year - paid for itslef many times over already ).

Unless I can get this thing completely stripped down, remove head etc, and back again in one day it means we may miss the gathering altogether.
Appears it may be MY fault for not using NEW camshaft bolts (or using Loctite) when I rebuilt the engine - only torqued the bolts tight.

Geez my bum is sore LOL.

Guys and Gals
Things are NOT looking promising. The head has to come off in the morning.
Took a couple of shots after camshafts removed ....

Just hope the pistons have not been damaged.
Bugger! I was supposed to pickup the D-MAX in the morning. sob, sob and join those lucky buggers out at
St George.
Enjoy yourselves. I'm thinking of you as I slave away.

Sorry Guys and Gals ..... can't make
St George. Hope you enjoy. I'm planning for changeover in
Brisbane middle of next week.
Update on progress so far ......
The pistons are OK. The head needs a qty of new valves, guides and shims. Of course a new VRS kit, head gasket and new head bolts (which have to come out of
Perth - BUT there's a public holiday there today I'm told).
The head is being setup again by a local machining
shop and 'should' be ready by Friday - NO! No! Not another Friday Funnies. LOL
Speaking to fellow members on Patrol4x4 it seems the cam bolt letting go is not common but Chaz has observed 3 so far. They were torqued to correct specs when rebuilt (but not sealed with Loctite) which the local engine guy says is not mandatory - although he is a believer in doing it.
The lesson I have learned from THIS exercise is .... when it comes to internal machinery bolts and nuts .... clean the threads and then apply Loctite - regardless of whatever anybody else says.
The reason I document these things is so many other people, through the power of the Internet, will learn by my mistakes.
Malcolm ( LOL off for another stubby ;-) )
