And I can remember as a kid travlling in the back
seat of my uncle's Belair; uncle driving, my sister sitting in the middle an my father riding shotgun whilst the wives and two kids were in the back.
Not a
seat belt. air bag or baby capsule to be seen
Pity they destroyed an old chev to prove a point

Mate, they should have used an old valiant instead. Lets face it, one less valiant in the world would be a good thing.... (: ..... lol...!

You're right its a pity about the old Chevvy being destroyed, those Malibu's most be a reasonably heavy car. We owned concurrently a 55 and a 57 Chevvy but I had fitted
seat belts, mainly to stop sliding away from the controls during right hand corners and despite the video results I would still prefer to be in one of them if I encountered one of the small cars on the road today, although the non collapsible steering column pointing at you is a worry but I think the addition of
seat belts to any of these big old yank tanks must improve your chances of survival.
When I was a kid it was quite common to have 8 people riding in the 37 Chev we then owned(I still have one) and its scary to think of crashes and suicide doors opening during roll overs, although when I rolled a 37 after a crash with an new FB holden wgn, the doors stayed closed cause of the bent running boards, it had a
seat belt fitted and I was still securely behind the wheel not ejected or scattered around all over the inside of the car like all the stuff in the glovebox and in the back
seat was.
Having said all that I really appreciate the safety features, comfort, reliability and advantages of modern cars.

Oh I've got a better one for you
Ever seen a Commodore disappear up it's own arse?
This was crashed into a concrete wall at 100km/h. Wasn't a crash test per se as it was a test of the testing sled:
