Yesterday when heading off to
Darwin, the Lux lost power. The
orange engine light came on. The
water and oil ok and motor sounded fine. I struggled back home and changed the fuel and air filters. Ran fine again. Went 135km into
Darwin. On way home did it again. Stopped and restarted engine. Ok again. Started this morning and seems ok.
I had washed car day before. I washed a bit under bonnet. Done that before with no dramas. Maybe got some
water into electrics??
Can you get a bit of a blockage (in new filter?) for a bit and then clear. What electrics could effect the fuel delivery.
I'll take it for a drive tonight to see if there are any more problems.

I found that it is best to read the Owners Manual in the Fault Finding Section, They list the warning light and possible causes & rectification.
With computers these days what you have described could be a multiple of causes and engine compensates to avoid damage. Thats my understanding anyways.
Not trying to be funny with this, but what you can find is that to find some of these problems you have to plug it in to the computer to diagnose. Cheers Tony

I live a long way from town and work full time so i was trying to avoid having to go to Toyota. The manual says the light is related to turbo. I think I may have got some
water in the wiring. Seems fine now. Took it for another long drive. It's so hot here anything would have to dry out.

Twinkles,
did you notice any black sooty smoke coming from the exhaust or any black residue build-up at the rear area near the exhaust ??

No black soot, but I may have been preoccupied and not noticed.
What would this mean?

Twinkles, if your muffler gets clogged in any way, including a loose baffle, it gives the same results, sudden lack of power and no other signs.

I had a similar problem once, most noticeable when having done some rough tracks, then went onto an open road at higher speeds. Engine light came on etc and sounded to me like it was starved for fuel. Local Toyota dealer put the diagnostic gear on and said I need a new injector pump for about $5000. Evenutally I traced it to dirty fuel in the tank which was restricting the pick up. I drained and flushed the tank (an aftermarket one with a drain plug) and no more probs. Total repar cost about $5 worth of fuel wasted. You can't always trust the diagnostic equipment.

Yep. 2002 Turbo diesel. Same engine light as you report, but had nothing to do with the engine.

Twinkles, I had the same issue after picking up a load of dirty fuel at
Mataranka. Had to drain and flush the tank as
well as change fuel filter. No problems thereafter.

hi
dirty fuel especially
water contaminated will always go to the bottom of the tank and is the first thing shortly after refuelling that will be sucked up blocking a filter
that's why fitting an after market filter with bowl/
water trap is a very good idea as depending on the amount of dirty fuel you get it can quiet often be drained out the bowl as
well as removing tank plug to let fuel flow until it looks clean without effectiing the filter : there are twin atermarket filter/bowl assemblies which are even better but of course you need the space to fit them in
always had these on our farm tractors,

My first reaction to your post was dirty fuel. Reading on, others appear to be thinking along similar lines.
A friend had a very similar problem with his 93 Hilux surf recently (likely to be a very similar kz motor to yours) from a servo just north of
Perth (
Lancelin). He took it to Toyota to have it diagnosed as dirty fuel.
Let us know how you go and if this solves the problem, so many of these posts are left without closure

Can't get in to see Toyota for a while. Drove it last night to
Batchelor and back, 160km. No problems. Engine light means turbo. Spoke to some engineer fellas here where I work and they suggested turbo lag. Probably got
water into electrics for turbo. Must have dried out. Pretty hot here, anything has to dry out.

By the way, the engine light does not only mean turbo by any means as you'll see when you look at the code descriptions.
