Hoping to go to Nulunbuy for a week on 17th October. Any advice?
I know to get a permit from Northern Land Council and
Recreation Permits from
Nhulunbuy.
What
places are a must to see?
Some
places need special permits as numbers going there at one time restricted. It's near the end of the access season so hope to be able to go most
places.
If it starts to rain heavily, I expect to pull up
camp and head back to the Stuart Highway. There will be 3 or 4 cars in the group.

Will the NLC issue a permit with such short notice??
A group I travelled with recently continued on to
Nhulunbuy after I departed for home and it took them ages to arrange permits.

We were there in 2004 and would have to agree with
Cape Arnhem being the best, the very best! Trailers were not allowed on the cape when we were there.

Hi Twinkles,
We lived in Gove from '90 -92', a truly beautiful 4wd/boating/fishing place to see.
Don't get put off, do what ever it takes to inspect and explore. If you have real problems MM me 'cos I still have some friends in Gove...
Cheers
Michael

Get your NLC permit, then make sure you arrive in
Nhulunbuy on a sunday, then be in the office 1st thing Monday morning (0830) to get the rest of your permits. Don't miss
Cape Arnhem and give yourself lots of time.
regards

Try and make it so that you arrive in
Nhulunbuy before lunch on whatever day you get there (mon to fri) and go to Dhimurru office "www.dhimurru.com.au"
and get your
camping permits.
There are some
places you can free-
camp which actually equal the quality of the paying permits ones.
(Wonga) (
Memorial) are two of the paying ones with Wonga being my pick,,,, generally they are about 30min out of town to their respective turnoffs and then about 30mins in from there depending on how fast you drive.
One of the best freecamps is a place called (Goanna) and the best way i can describe that place is paradise and better than the paying ones in my opinion..
Be careful along the beaches because i have never seen sandflies as bad as there,,, they got through sandfly mesh and caused havoc one night,,,,, we learnedby that and stayed inland after that with only day trips to
the beach areas.
Your week will disappear fast because it is easy to spend two days at each
camping place.
Make sure you acquire an ALCOHOL PERMIT if you want to drink away from town and also buy drink,, that is avail from courthouse...
Cheers and enjoy...

Thanks for the info on Gove. Where is the Goanna
camp site? Can't see it on internet or maps.

As you are heading into
Nhulunbuy you turn to the left almost directly opposite the turnoff to (
rocky point,
turtle beach,
little bondi etc)...
It is quite a narrow road with Goannas on a hard to spot
sign..
About 15min drive down,,, go past the first
campsite with shallow
water and go to the next which is only 100metres on.....
The
water there is pristine and it is the only place in Arnhemland where i didnt have to look over my shoulder for crocs....
And the
water is waist deep there....
I swam in heaps of
places there and it is the only place i felt safe from crocs...

The turnoff that Voxson is referring to is clearly marked '
Dalywoi Bay' and is on the right when heading to
Nhulunbuy. The
Goanna Lagoon turn off is directly opposite but the
water level has dropped drastically at this late stage of the dry season when it hasn't rained for six months or so. I camped there last night and it is still a lovely spot but the whole area has been burnt out so the bush is very sparse compared to how it was earlier in the dry.
Voxson is nervous of crocs even in the Murray sewer, (sorry river), down where he lives and he has a roof top tent just too be safe from the ones that haven't learnt to climb up his ladder yet!!!
I wouldn't recommend you visiting this area now, Twinkles as the country is dry and burnt, the streams are low and it is starting to really heat up. June, July is the best time to visit as the way the country looks at the moment doesn't do it justice!

Heya Chris, (pishaba)..
There you again trying to ward off visitors from your paradise up there.
I dont blame you really,,, i would too if i was you..
I have never visited a place so brilliant and thanks to you saw some very awesome
places which i will never disclose to anybody....
But you do need to build up a little more fear-factor so you keep breathing air and not
water my good buddy....

Hi Twinkles
When you get to Gove, you will need to get a liquor permit from the Government Offices upstairs near Woolies, facing the car
park, you will need a form of photo identification, you will need to show this when you purchase liquor.
Gove Yacht Club is a good place for a relax, temp
membership available.
Yep, unless your used to them, the sand flies can be a bit of a problem.
Great fishing, charters available, but I wouldn't eat any fish caught near the plant in the bay.
Make sure you do the free
mine tour if you get a chance.
Also a Nissan dealer in town and an IGA/camping/hardware store.
Also watch the speed limits in built up areas.
Good place, have fun, road in can have the odd bump and corrorgations . . lol
Cheers

Hi Twinkles,
Went up to Gove on Sunday, back to
Katherine today. Road is bit ordinary at the moment. The corrugations north of
Beswick slowed us down a bit. None of the
water crossings are a problem, Goyder was only up to the running boards on our Triton (downstream is still the best path). Watch out for Little Goyder, it sneaks up on you if you are enjoying the good bit of road between the crossings :)
Plenty of buffs, brumbys and donkeys just south (west) of
Bulman. Bad corrugations again approx 80km out of
Nhulunbuy right up to the bitumen. There was a
grader working this bit, but didn't seem to making a difference. If you are using Natmap 2008 in your GPS, the approach to
Nhulunbuy (goes south of the airport) isn't on the map.
Mainoru store is closed until next year (april??) for refurbishment, according the a
sign on the
gate. We used about 195L of diesel round trip. If you're looking for a place to eat, try Gove House, it's a bit like Sizzler, but is not widely advertised. Enjoy your trip, there is plenty to see and do.
