Just wondering if anyone out there has had to replace the electric motor for the rear window on a 1990 toyota 4runner? Or if you have come up with a good fix for the problem (apart from selling, burning etc :-)) Not sure if the motor is dying or wether there is some other problem. All help appreciated.
Cheers

There are a few "smarts" in the system ie. to prevent the window going up when the tailgate is open (or not closed properly) and to prevent the rear wiper from operating when the window isn't up, etc.
What are the symptoms?

Have found with experience of imports in NZ that most Toyota window winder motors are the same.
Some are mounted upside down to other models so you just need the one off the opposite door..
Perhaps someone here may recondition them.
One way they were mounted in one model Corona the seals let go and
water ran down into the motor and as it had no drain it filled up and rusted up.
We used to panel beat the door inside and fit an upside down one which didnt fill up with
water.
Just a thought. Ask a leccy he may know where they get fixed.
Or a wrecker.

when the window gets half way up it stops and you need to push it up the rest of the way by hand.
Cheers for the heads up about the motors. Might have a look at a wrecker for another motor and will ask a local auto lec about repairing the motor.

Try to get 12 volts to the motor with another battery and some separate wires, this is to check the motor is ok .I had one a few years ago the problem was in the relay and electronics in the side panel (on the right looking in the back of the car) the relay was only sending 8 volts to the motor and it kept stopping half way up.

Yep common problem, in fact it is the only common problem they have. Had to replace the one on my old runner. A Toyota motor was about $500 and a aftermarket one was about $300. I went for the aftermarket one but still had some issues for a while. Few years ago now sold the vehicle about 3 three years ago.

I could get one from a wrecker in NZ for under $100 and it would be a good one.
When I came over I left 4 of them in the Corona I sold.

Stuart,
Have a look at this site for repairing the window.
link
I have just bought an 89 model for my son's first car and managed to fix the rear window. My problem was the switch inside the rear door to stop the window from winding up when the door was open. I simply shorted this switch and now it works fine.
