I need advice quickly on the replacement of my jockey wheel for my camper trailer. The shoulder bolt that holds the wheel bracket to the base bracket with the U bolts snapped, dropping the trailer to the ground. The jockey wheel is an ARK swivel type. On asking a couple of trailer places, I bought a heavier duty jockey wheel, but the bracket supplied can only be bolted or welded to the drawbar; it doesn't come with a U bolt style bracket. The upside is this jockey wheel doesn't have a shoulder bolt, rather 4 cup bolts that are easier to replace and spread the load more evenly. What is the consensus with welding the base bracket vs a U bolt style bracket? Is one better/stronger than the other? A mate at work reckons Trojan brand from Repco is good, but the Trailer places told me to steer clear of ARK or Trojan. What advice is there? Thanks.

G'day Bluemetaldaisy,

The best bracket that I have found is made by Manutec.
In the past I have found the bracket to be the weak point, when on the odd occasion I have had to disconnect from the trailer to snatch it out.

When I weld it onto the trailer I also put a spot weld on the outside of the tube part of the bracket (top and bottom) where it meets the drawbar.
I've found when there is sideways movement with the jockey wheel this is where they start bending first.

This is the bracket I have now best I can find.Site Link

Thanks for the advice. I haven't the time to do any more research so I had the local trailer bloke weld the new jockey wheel to the drawbar anyway. The weld looks first class, and they then hit it with some grey gal style paint to protect it. Only thing is the larger solid wheel pushes against the rubber stone protector, but that's a small price to pay. When I pushed the trailer back onto the patio, it rolls much better than the previous one.
