does anyone know how to avoid the truck routes?

last year i turned off the tar and took the dirt only to find stock-trucks or mud-carters.

As a road the M1 has no character to travel on, just service-center after service-centre. Smaller roads are very interesting to travel, but often much more intimidating and dangerous...

so apart from gazzeted tourist-roads, what are the best ways to go?

Robertbruce,

From now until Feb any roads in grain farming country may have grain carting trucks of every conceivable configuration and weight (including overweight) running around on them.

In dairy country there are semi and bigger tankers picking up milk from farms on rural roads and tracks.

In timber country there are timber trucks, usually B double or bigger with logs stacked high, travelling at or about the speed limit.

In mining country there are service trucks, ore trucks and occasionally haulpaks taking up space on usually dirt roads.

In the city there are delivery trucks, builders vehicles with ladders or timber planks secured more or less safely on roof high frames and cyclist gaggles in their lycra uniforms going everywhere.

You can not avoid trucks anywhere, just be considerate and patient and enjoy the drive no matter where you are travelling.

Disco.

And maybe keep the UHF on the road channel to keep an ear out for their movements....

DARN IT

that's it.... A google overlay based on collected data, collating things such as seasons, harvests, road conditions, last graded etc...

the overlay would show a color-coded road usage intensity.
Yellow would be the color for us tourists.

this would not be hard to do and would save lives...or might even be the intention of the latest google thingy everyone was up-in-arms-about.

some people should not have licences to drive as it means that they may encounter other road users.
Robertbruce you really do need to get a life, and grow up.
as is a great site to learn from. If you dont like trucks then dont drive, because you will find them on nearly every road in Aus.

Bushy.

In most better truckstops/roadhouses, you can buy a Hema truckies map book with all the main routes for different configurations of rigs marked in it.
Go buy one and you will be able to see where the main routes are, but your always going to encounter trucks, they carry this country.
Cant see what your worried about, personally i would be more worried about some of the people who are now towing large vans around the country who have a car licence and little or no rig driving experience.

KAREN !! havent you left yet ?? LOL

We have just had 9 days away on the Upper Murray in the new house with wheels, and I dont think we should ahve done that. It was very hard to come home and not to just keep on driving. Bring on the "sold" sign................lol

I have your number Pesty and I will let you know when we are on our way.

Mate,

most of those dirt roads are there to service the rural communities and properties.

We just come along and like to use them, guess wherever there is a road trucks will be on them.

Maybe you could have a map overlay of the least likely route trucks are going to use. Having said that if they are moving stock you will get lots of roadtrains on a any road.

..oh gee, i guess i should have said "main-truck-routes-for-the-annanly-rentive-pendantics".... but being on this site, with an occordingly open mind, one might think that was what i would be more-so refferring to...

It would be good to hear from some truck-drivers about how to avoid thier more intensively used roads....listenning on the radio coming across the sturt is easy enough but what about the smaller routes that stock-vehicles take between auction and paddock for instance....
