We have just back from our first trip into Western Queensland. Had a ball, made it up Big Red & had a cold one as the sun set over that lump of red sand.
Got sand blasted out of Welford NP, had to scarpa to Windorah before sun set only made it to Cooper Creek & got smashed all night. One of the dome tents was ripped to shreds we believed the winds to have been well over 100K/H.
Had lunch at Haddons Corner then spent the night at Deon's Lookout, what an awesome spot, great views, this land is big. We watched loads of vehicles & one motor bike making their way through the night away from Birdsville. Then waking up to fantastic colors on all those ridges around Deon’s in the morning.
The group had planned to spend a few days in the Diamontina NP, only to wake on the first morning with a cooler blasting from the South. Camping a Hunter Gorge was to exposed, but still had a good look around the park, will be back to that park.
Found the country towns great to explore & the locals very friendly, the pub meals very nice when eaten.
I’m already planning the longer desert trip.

Cheers David

G’day David, I crossed the desert in June and three weeks later camped right beside the river at Hunters Gorge. I only spent two nights there and I will definitely be back. Don’t know whether you’re a fisherman our not, but I put in a shrimp trap and caught five baits the first night…. caught five fish. Got four baits the second night…. caught four fish.
I’ve attached two photos, both of the park – what a contrast. What a beaut country.
Myles.
