Avan
Has any one had experience; good or bad with the portable airconditioners (not the evap. type) that can be purchased for about $5- 700 from most retail shops.

I have one that I use in a small bedroom. They tend to be quite noisy and will not cool a very large area.
The drip tray also fills rapidly when conditions are even a little bit humid.

hi, we tried that ideas for cooling our van down, all it did was cost us money. our van is a 17.9 foot poptop and we bought the propper potable air con costing us $699 on sale a couple of years ago. we took it on one holiday to try, beleive me don't bother, it was a total pain shifting it around and really didn't work now where near as good as we thought, it did take
the tip of the heat off but no where even near what you would say it cooled it down. we ended up selling it for $300 and bought the right air con for the van, good luck chris.

Hi Avan, we bought a Dimplex from Hardley Normals and took it away with us several times
camping. We sat it just inside the door of the camper and ran it full
bore all night and it was enough to allow us all to get to sleep. They produce a lot of
water in humid conditions so you need to attach the special spigoted drain hose and drain it outside or into a large receptacle otherwise it you will be up several times to empty the tray. When in a caravan
park it was no noisier than anyone elses air conditioner. When off the beaten track - we camped a short way from others and placed the genny in a 'hollow' and all was
well. The Jenny was able to run it for about 7 hours on a full
tank of fuel- this was enought to allow us to get some sleep on the extreme nights. The down side is that our travelling mates gave us heaps for taking it along - sour grapes I'd say- they had a pretty rough time in their swags trying to keep cool. It is fairly big and bulky, and not something you would take if space was a premium. I'm not sure it would stand up to a lot of treking about either. Hope this helps, doc.
