We have had this happen twice now, once on flat ground with van on back at few months ago, and second time today while in garage and trying to engage Reverse.
Eventually used shift lock release to engage A/T - has anyone else had this problem and why is it happening?
Brake lights and all fuses functioning normally.

Gday jazzy
Sounds to me like the
park locking lever is staying in the locked position with the extra weight of the van.

The second time it happened the van was not hooked up to the XTrail.

Hi Jazzy,
My guess is that there is a gremlin running out of control in the electronics that control the auto trans system. Moisture, poor electrical contacts or poor earthing are all possibilities.
Hope that you get it sorted without too much hassle.
In the 'Good Old Days" one had a positive mechanical linkage which controlled the works (Gear Lever, 4wd lever and Hi/Lo lever), much less trouble but a bit more physical effort required. (I've got one of these old ones and a newfangled electronic computer controlled one too.
Guess which one gives less trouble???.
The old one!!!
Disco.

There is actually an item in the owners manual in reference to this, and how to combat it, so would doubt it would be a gremlin, just wondering if anyone else who actually owns or has owned an XTrail has had this happen to them?
PS The new electronics in vehicles can be a problem but I guess you just have to put up with it when you purchase a newer vehicle, as opposed to purchasing something that has the old system with no electrical problems but has a trillion kilometres on the clock !!! :-)

Did you have your foot on the brake? It stays locked in
Park if you don't.

Yeah wifes Yaris
sedan is the same, wont release from
park if foot not on brake, also if not in
park you cannot get key out of ignition to exit the vehicle. Regards Steve

Thanks Phil, you hit the nail on the head, it is a safety precaution so you dont put it in D when the vehicle is not stationary - a bit of a pest especially when the vehicle was parked in the garage but I can see the reasoning behind this feature.

I have experienced this problem with my X-trail, although usually on inclines. I think it is the "park" locking on auto transmission. I suggest that you ensure that you apply the hand brake before putting the car into
Park.
