Dear Fellow Caravanners. We have a 2006 model Windsor Genesis 19ft caravan with a Carefree of Colarado awning. Recently whilst holidaying we had the awning down and noticed a tear in the vinyl after returning from some sightseeing. The tear is about 2 ft long and is located where the the vinyl joins the roller. We manage to keep it cleaned protected and covered most of the time. Is this a common problem with vinyl awnings? Has anyone else experienced this event. Has any member used insurance to have the vinyl repaired? We have used tape to repair it for the meantime. The question I would like to ask the
forum is: Are there replacement vinyls for these awnings? Are there any other stronger materials that can be used without affecting the operation of the awning? The other problem that we have experienced with this awning is shrinkage across the width of the awning ie. The awning edges have shrank about 1/2" to an inch either side making it difficult to line up the side annexe walls. I reside in the Marayong area and would appreciate any advice.

Hi John and Chris
Replacement awnings are available try Coast to Coast they were at Ryde.
One of the reasons for tearing away at the roller when the awning is rolled out you should leave about 1/3 of a turn on the roller the seam should be about 1/4 of a turn on the outside otherwise the awning tears at the sewn section that slides into the roller.
Always tie down the awning with at least two ropes and pegs as the wind can come up at any time.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Ted

The vinyl that is on the top/outside does deteriorate due to UV exposure, not uncommon for them to tear away completely with a decent gust of wind.
A friend who is an upholsterer/trimmer has replaced/repaired quite a few.
