Hi All,

Took the new van out on the weekend for a nights stopover. The foam mattress is a bit hard on the old bone. I can't replace it with a innerspring because the bed becomes the dining area (Jurgens Stargazer). I was thinking about the best way to make things a bit more comfortable while still saving space and thought that maybe a self inflating double mattress over the top might be the go. Just wondered what others might be doing here?

Rick,

Just an idea, it might cost a bit more. Why don't you get a innerspring mattress made in pieces so you can still pull it apart and sit on it for your lounge/table?

I know that the mattress factory in perth might be able to do something like this for you.

Foam mattres's loose a huge amount of resistance (around 40% ) in first few sleeps , so if it is new , maybe thats the issue as usually they end up to soft Rick.

What we used was a foam overlay looks like egg carton, put over original foam mattress.

Yep, got sore shoulders when called in to comfort my 5yr old so went out to the local mattress place and got the egg shell type foam underlay, now if I fall asleep with her I don't wake up until morning (or I get kicked and headbutted and elbowed ...)

The egg carton type foam overlay is comfortable and can be rolled up when the bed is not a bed.

We got ours to go over an innerspring mattress because half the users wanted it softer & more comfortable, and we had one over a foam mattress in our previous camper trailer too. They are available at Target, Clarke Rubber etc and from memory about $60.

Could well be your best bet.

could you replace the foam mattress with a memory foam mattress, they are normally thin and meant to be very comfy/forgiving on the joints.

We tried a number of alternatives, however, found that the egg shell foam mattress topper works the best (except for our latex topper which is far too thick and cumbersome to carry around) - light and easy to transport - got it at Pillow Talk for $45 on special 2 weeks ago - they might still have it on special now.
We actually took our QS mattress from the van, put it on our bed with the egg shell topper for a week and slept like a log.
PS Foam mattresses do get softer over time, but could take a few sleeps.

Just another idea, the most comfortable mattress I've found so far is one of those self inflating 4wd matresses. They are advertised in 4wd Action Magazine, we picked up a different brand to the advertised one at the camping store. Basically it's a self inflating mattress (double in our case) with foam on the inside, so no matter what you can't get a bed that goes flat because it gets a hole in it.
Anyway they are rather bulky, very hard to roll them up any smaller than say a swag (especially the doubles) but I find that I can leave the air caps open as it makes no real difference to the mattress feel, it's just comfy for me. Apart from the bulk factor I think they're great, we have the two doubles on top of each other made up as a spare bed in the spare room on which I sleep when the kids are sick because it's at that end of the house..... anyway the thing is that they are so comfy I don't find a need to go back to the normal bed during the night and I would certainly rather sleep on those than the inner spring sofa bed mattress that we used to put the visitors on.

Sorry I have a tendency to ramble on as you can see, I just wanted to throw the extra idea out there for you, just not sure if the bulk factor would be an issue? Maybe worth checking out for yourself.
