Hi All,
just wondered if we are crazy to be contemplating going to Fraser Island for the first two weeks of January. Mad keen to get back there, and this may be the only chance we'll get for a while. Just wondered about crowds, weather etc! Any thoughts would appreciated.
Cheers

Not at all, I have been to Frazer twice in January, the first time was on new years eve, the second was the 2nd week of January, both time we had a ball.

Even a bad day on Fraser is better than a good day at work.
It can be quite hot, windy, wet suddenly and the flys are out in force, but you're on Fraser island.
All this fades as you settle neck deep into
Eli creek watching brasillian backpackers.........
Its a big island, book where you want to
camp now and go and enjoy yourself.
With any luck the cyclones wont come down ala last year.
Have a read of the qld gov website.
http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/fraser_island_great_sandy_national_park/index.html
This fortnights condition report, its from the above link;
http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/register/p01663aa.pdfCamping on
the beach, as windy as it is at times is more comfortable than
central station (should change the name to bollard city) which gets little in the way of a breeze and has mossies instead of flys.
Be aware that a lot of the rocks are currently exposed and bypass tracks will be the only way around some of them.
They have new rules regarding dingos and food storage if you havent been over there in the last 4 or 5 years, the rangers will wander through your
camp and check, there are mainly common sense, read the pamphet when you get your vehicla and
camping permits.
I've been over there for the last 4 Januaries on the Fraser Is cleanup and while the weather has occasionally been questionable a good time was had by all.

Treks are quite rough in some spots. I don't have my own 4WD but even if I would probably hire one for short stays.
Avoid western side of the island. Many people's cars get swamped there.
Lake McKenzie is beautifull, but is not very shallow.
Ocean is nice for fishing but not quite for surfing/bodyboarding.
Dingos could be a
hazard if you travel with kids.
There is a nice resort on the island if you want to stay a night or two in a more civilised place.
I've been there only once, I can't wait to get there again!

We camped at Woralie
creek in Jan 2 years ago next to a pristine fresh
water deep creek right on
the beach and we were the only ones there! It is a lot quiter on the western side, we took our dingy as
well and launched it from
the beach.
I heard the march flies carry you away, but it wasn't too bad.
Fraser has lots of space so It would be fine.
Double island point or inskip at that time would be very crowded.
Have fun

When I was there in 06, camped just behind the dunes at
Ocean Lake. Nice! and you got a 2k drive to the lake itself, when I was there, not one other person even ventured to
Ocean Lake.. it was all
mine.. (but didn't skinny dip just in case!)
