Hi all,
We are quite new to
camping, having been converted whilst driving across from
Perth to Brissie. So far all our
camping has been in the dry.
We are planning a three week
camping trip in South East Queensland in January, and I am worried that our current tent won't cope with a heavy downpour. We have a Coleman Overlander 6CV, which we are very happy with, but it isn't canvas (polyester) and I doubt it would do
well in heavy rain.
Can we waterproof it by rigging a tarp over it (if so how!) or should we be looking at investing in a canvas tent? Any advice gratefully received ;-)

How many are in the tent , how much do you want to spend , where can you carry it , how long do you stay in one spot .

A good tarp would be your best bet (even if the tent is waterproof)
At least 5m x 3m, 6 poles with a ridge bar joining the tops of the 2 centre ones is all you need. Some
camping places sell this sort of set-up as a complete kit.
This would keep your tent dry in the wet, and cooler in the sun
cheers
Mark

Installing a tarp over the tent means more work on site. If you plan to stay 1 week in one place then is ok but if you plan to travel around, you will probably need a quick setup.
If you want a solid weatherproof tent I would suggest either Oztent (30 seconds tent) or BlackWolf turbo (7 minutes tent)-both in canvas.
We bought the Turbo 300 tent (more headroom than Oztent) from BlackWolf and we are very happy with it.
You will probably look around at 1000 mark.

We have the 8cv version and it has seen some heavy rain and we have never had a problem with it. Only thing is if you are planning on moving to different spots heaps then get a tent that set up much quicker. But if you are going to be staying put for the 3 weeks then you will be fine.

Hi Troll,
Thats interesting - have you given it any special treatment?
We drove across from
Perth to
Brisbane setting up every night somewhere new except one night, so ten setups and set downs in 11 days - we soon got bored of it! Its a great tent though, we love it, but I know its not rated for severe rain such as you would get around here in January... and to get the same space in a Black Wolf we would need the front annex thingy completed putting the cost way up!

We have a black wolf turbo tent, the real thing not the half price one from BCF.
They are great, put up in a minute, waterproof, enough room for a few people, stand up in and tough. They are expensive about $1200 but the value of an good easy strong tent to put up is invaluable.
Nothing worse than tents which take a degree and an hour to put up.
I have also owned and travelled up
cape york with an oz tent which are excellent but a bit long and bulky, however I would also highly recommend the rv 4 or 5.
There is also a good shade appliance called the coleman event. They are easy to put up and can stand high winds.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far.
This trip we are planning on moving a couple of times so minimum 5 nights in one place - so not too worried about the setup time. Sounds like the tarp would be a good idea anyway, so maybe will look into that and look at a Black Wolf further down the line (both myself and my wife are around 6foot so the head height would be great). We should be able to get in in the 4WD.
I like the look of the Coleman Event, will investigate that one further.
Thanks everyone!

Before we splashed out big $$$ on a camper trailer, we took an OzTrail Tourer 9 Plus tourer tent to
Cape York for 5 weeks.
Quick to set up, and a lot cheaper than some alternatives mentioned.
It might not be as convenient in the rain as the others because it just has flap / awning over the doorway.
Yor Coleman tent is good quality, the tarpaulin idea is worth pursuing, IF you can erect it fairly quickly.

We have a Blackwolf Turbo 300. Excellent in every way except the size when packed up. We have a Pajero, with a cargo barrier, and have trouble putting the tent in the back - it has to go in on an angle. Then we have to try and fit the Waeco, table, chairs, cooking equipment, food,
water, bedding, clothes etc, and have a lot of trouble.
We have a 4yo, so can't fold the second row of seats down to make more room, even if we didn't have the cargo barrier.
Just something else to think about.

Just gave our new OZtent RV5 its first work out over the weekend.
So simple to put up and setup - had 2 adults and 2 kids - with great room between us.
And it rained quite heavy on us - not a drop through.
So I can highly recommend the Oztent for simple touring travel...
