My HP PDA with built in(?) Garmin GPS started playing up last week.

It starts by running fine but then after a while it logs off. Then it comes on again and a little (Yank) voice says "GPS OK". Yesterday it started showing that I was going in the opposite direction or it showed that I was travelling a couple of hundred metres from where I was supposed to be. Today it is doing the same thing. It comes up on Ozi, then shows the yellow arrow denoting where I asm, then after a short while the yellow in the arrow disappears and then it logs off altogether. MIght leave it like that for 15 minuytes and then it will come on again and the idiot will say "GPS OK" !!!!!

And guess what? Its a few months out of warranty!! But I have spoken with the supplier and seeing as I do quite a bit of business with him ,he is going to "see me right" whatever that means :-)

Probably time to go back to paper maps and a Boy Scout compass

Hey Willem I havent noticed anything peculiar with my Garmin GPS, sunds to me like a processing error with the NMEA strings that the GPS delivers to Ozi. I wonder if anything can be corrupting the signals?

I have a Garmin Quest. Last week I noticed that it seemed to be tracking a lot slower then usual and at the same time the altitude reading was all over the place. Seems to have 'settled down' now though. Fingers crossed.

Weekend before last my factory sat nav chucked a wobbly, it was connected(showing sat connect) but it was showing me about 50m further south than i actually was. the software was trying to correct it by moving to the closest road but kept reverting back to the GPS location.that was in the morning on the way to our property, i even removed and reinstalled the disc but it made no difference. in the afternoon it was all good?? what the???

My Garmin Nuvi 250W has occasionally gone to a blank yellow screen - no maps, just the vehicle icon. Turn it off & back on and it doesn't seem to make any difference. But most times it works just fine. What the???

Have 2 Tom Tom's and they are pretty basic gear unless you want to throw away more money. More of an amusement than anything else. :-)

My pda running Copilot does similar things, to fix it I just reset the pda with the pointer and star again. Works perfectly after that til I turn it off again. Simpler to just reset it each time I use it and no problem.

Hi Willem
Is your GPS in built or a part of a mounting cradle that supports the PDA.
If the latter, it is common to have a compact flash mount GPS that sends NEMA sentences direct to the PDA running Ozi. Check the physical connection of the GPS unit if this is the case - the lock facility is a bit average & needs to be in the up position. In my case, the tiny screws that hold the thing together had pulled through the plastic - glued it back together all is now well.
The bit about being a couple of hundred metres off the track sounds like a datum (ADG66 / WGS84) issue?
Cheers, Tony.

Thanks Tony,

The Garmin GPS is part of the internal software. Ozi and Natmaps are loaded by means of a SD Card. The PDA is clipped on to a windscreen mount. I will have a look at any probablw loose bits in the morning.

Today I went for a drive over some gravel roads and the system worked perfectly. Its a strange thing............:-)

Cheers
