is it possible to put a 1hz motor with a 5 speed gearbox into a hj47 or a hj45?
if so what are the main works that need to be done?

Weld new engine mounts.
Possible drive shaft modification
Probable crossmember fabrication
Radiator outlets on opposite sides(using A 2F radiator should solve this)
Fit fuel filters to firewall( an OEM 1HZ filter and primer or DELPHI 296 is easiest)
Add fuel return to tank (I think the 2H returns the excess fuel to the pump)
The vacuum hoses can be plugged into the 1HZ pump.
You need to add a manual glow system.
Power steering will depend on whether you have it or not,but the 1HZ pump should work ok with the 4* series steering box
Add 12v power to fuel cut solenoid to activate fuel pump from ignition, you mayb able to use some wiring from the EDIC
There is a few owners doing this kind of engine swap into 40 series and other landcruisers in the diesel
forum on IH8MUD.
I put a 1HZ into a FJ73 and I got a mobile auto electrician to come and wire up the alternator and starter.
Temp sensor and oil pressure should be a straight plug and play with added wire or a change of plugs where necessary.
Tacho wil lbe easier to go aftermarket

I do know someone who put a 12HT in a HJ47 and he said it wasnt that hard but he also has his own workshop(diesel mechanic)

That would be easy as many HJ47 had 2h motors which is the same mounts etc

To fit the 5 speed you need the matching transfer case as
well, as has been said the engine mounts, transmission crossmember and its associated mounts all need to be fitted, you also need to fit a later model rear end with handbrake on the rear brakes as the HJ47 has a transfer/rear tailshaft monted handbrake.
Wheel brake cylinders are different so you may also need to change proportioning valve and master cylinder.
BTDT but it was a long while ago, came to the conclusion that is might be easier to move on to a HJ75.

I thought the HJ47 had a hand brake on the rear wheels and the HJ45 had the hand brake on the drive shaft

I had one of the last HJ47's sold in Oz (bought april 85 after the 75 series came out) and it had a tailshaft handbrake, the FJ45 I had before it also had a tailshaft handbrake. AFAIK the 60 series was the only Tojo of that vintage to have the handbrake on the rear brakes.
60 series housings are also wider track than a 47 or 75 and the spring perches need to be relocated if using them on a 40 or 75. Alternatively the 60 and 75 brake bits will fit onto a 47 housing but you will need to weld the handbrake cable mounts on.

God knows why you want to put a 5 speed in ... they don't go around corners above 90 km/h...

Get your self a 12HT motor and fit a 5/speed box to it and slot it in.........you will need to change the rear transfer case shaft from a 4/speed box so the hand break will fit on to the box,....(You wont need to cut or modifire the cross member behind the gear box) change the bottom out let on your radiator,so it wont touch the Pwr/steering pump, your tail shaft will need to be shortened and balanced, the front shaft will be ok.....all else fits and you will need to fit a 3 inch exhaust...........Happy motoring, as i have fitted the 12ht to my HJ47......i also have fitted two Donaldson air filters and pre cleaners.some picks in my profile.
Cheers for now...William H...Bunbury...WA.

Yes, buy a 1hz out of a hzj75 with belhousing and/or 5 speed, and swap them in...even better, buy a 1hz out of a hzj75 (the engine mount block mounts are different to 80 series) and a 5 speed from a 80 series and bolt that in...stromger, lower low range, heaps better....the last option however would be to buy a hdj78 and swap the runing gear/sell the leftovers
