Not sure if I'm allowed to ask this type of question on this forum - but here goes.

I am trying to edit our travel video/dvd via Windows Vista, Movie Maker with very little success.

Am thinking I should just bite the bullet and go buy a programme, but I want to be sure that what I buy will work with our new laptop/Vista.

Anyone have any suggestions of something which is relatively simple to use, and reliable.

Thanks....

Hi Bunny,

IU have had the same problem with editing some of the offroad clips that I took at the outback challenge using moviemaker. I could link them together ok by adding one to another but actual editing as in selection of a section and cut and paste type of editing I couldn't work it out. In the end I used another program, whose name escapes me right now.

I think I know how you do that Bonz and Bunny.

Load the video and then play it while you have it in the time line function. Just under the play window are the controls and to the right of them is a little button with "split" on it. When you come to an area you want to edit, just hit split and it will cut a "start" into the film at that point. Let it play again starting at this new point and then keep "splitting" it as you see fit. This divides the one big film into a series of clips. You can then shorten or delete this clips as you see fit by highlighting them and dragging one end back across the area you wanted to get rid of, right click and delete the whole section.

Did that make sense?

Cheers Mick

Bunny,

I've been using windows movie (vista) maker for the past week and find it pretty easy to use (considering I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to computers and tech). In fact I couldn't believe how simple it was. Have you got the video files saved to your computer and are they in individual file format? By that I mean is each clip a separate file or do you have one continuous long DVD type video with all the clips joined. It is much easier to utilise movie maker with a collection of clips rather than a DVD file.

I was looking at Sony Vegas but in light of how I'm doing so far, I think I'll stick with movie maker until I get more skilled.

Here's one I put together today for example

Cheers Mick

Very impressive - and I'm jealous - just to clairify I do have just the one file which I'm working with. And yes, I have saved it to my hard drive. Can't even get far enough to split it into segments (it just drops straight into audio)- I've done most of the reading, so have a general idea of how to do things, but sadly can't be past first base. I have also had the filed re-saved to a VOB file, but that hasn't worked either!! Frustrated!

But I'd certainly like to steal some of your "effects" - I'm sure you had fun putting all the memories together.

Thanks Bunny,

all the effects are click and drag "transitions" and "effects" on the movie maker program. I'm amazed how easy it is. I'm still making plenty of mistakes and haven't gotten around to loading a sound track or narration to them as yet. Small steps LOL. Perhaps you'll share your final efforts with us all as a blog?

Cheers Mick

Just had a quick look at Sony Vegas - and there is a buyer beware caption - may not work on Vista. This is what I'm hearing - it's very hit and miss whether it works or not. Perhaps I'm just one of the unlucky ones.

Mick,

Nice bit of editing. How did you mount the camera for the shots through the front window? It almost looks like it is on a stabilised gimble mount. Maybe it is just the superior Nissan ride! And also what type of video camera are you using. I have just started using a Canon SD FS21, but I am a bit disappointed in the resolution when viewed on my PC. It's not too bad on the Sony TV but I think it would be better in HD. For editing I use Adobe Premier Elements and I now enjoy that program but it was a steep learning curve!

Kingo,

I'm new to the video thing and only bought the camera a week or two prior to my trip this year. Still haven't read the manual Ha Ha. I intended to spend about a grand on the camera but saw the Sony and beat a good price out of the retailers. I have the Sony HDR-XR200. It has a 120 Gig hard drive and 4 megapixel still camera. The anti-shock/shake system in it is absolutely fantastic. It also has a GPS feature that tags your video to a GPS location and you can then view on Google maps etc. This especially suited me because of the remote off track travelling I do. I have been very impressed with the unit. The people who travelled with me this year we also suitably impressed and bought the unit above this one on their return. Sony provide the PMB program to download/edit etc. The other thing with the Sony is that it allows you to record in High Definition and then convert to standard or lower. All the clips I have on Vimeo (and the one above) have been at a low resolution WAV format.

In the vehicle, I use a RAM mount clipped to the Jesus handle on the A Pillar. I did have it on the passenger’s side and operated it with the remote but found it was a damn site easier to control with it on the A pillar beside me. These bits and bobs from RAM you can get on the GPSOZ website about $60 for everything ( http://www.gpsoz.com.au/ram.htm ). You want the camera base mount, an elbow and something to attach it to your vehicle. Nothing so flash as a gimble mount I'm afraid. Of course the superior ride of the Nissan does help lol.

G'day Kingsley and Mick. I have actually had similar problems trying to work through movie making software, I just thought I was wasting time. I stopped using it, I may have to try again later.

Mick, the good thing about all the gear in the front of the car is that you can pull the seat forward so that there is plenty of room in the rear for a passenger ;-)) Hahaha

Video editing can be amazingly simple or frustratingly diffcult. From experience, I would strongly suggest that you start simple, with software embedded into Windows, get lots of experience and make some mistakes (hey, that's how we all learn) and if then confident enough you can always upgrade to something a little more sophisticated. Good luck with your ventures.

I would recommend using Movie Maker at your knowledge level. Having said that I would download the new Movie Maker as you may find it easier to use. Editing the video is easy , in terms of cutting is easy. You need to be using Vista rather than XP and if you are using Vista (Your comments suggest Vista/laptop) there are 2 versions of movie maker, I have pasted a link for the version you may not have, you can run both versions on your laptop.
Once settled on which version you want to run I would recommend Youtube for some tips and video tutorials.

Thanks TerraFirma for the link and also YouTube - that sounds like a good place to start.

I have downloaded the other two versions of movie maker as you suggested, and have tried both - still same result, can't get the file into the timeline.

I will ask on Youtube

That sounds like an issue with the video file perhaps? I have never had that problem, have you tried pics and other sources to place in the timeline.? You may need to start a trial and error system to get to the bottom of your issue. Here's some links that are worth reading, sometimes something can trigger a thought process which fixes the issue.

http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/video/articles/34947.aspx

Does the video file reside on the computer now or are you trying to import from camera.?

Microsoft Support Tech may ask you these questions:

So that we can start the prosess of tracking the problem, I have some questions for you.

What Verssion of Vista are you running? And are you running SP1?

What other AVI software do you use with your files for import or export?

Are you moving AVI’s from a video camra to PC? Or just moving them around IN the PC?

Are you trying to play them in Windows Movie Maker from the camra? Or the PC?

Have you checked the Windows Movie Maker site for any updates or other list to this same problem?

If you would, please check thses out and let us know.

Than you for the post. Hope we can help.

OK one more thing you should try which is not too hard.

1. From within Movie Maker click on tools then options then compatibility
2. You will see a bunch of codecs ticked
3. You may have another piece of software on your PC which is causing the prob
4. Click on restore defaults and try again.
5. Failing that untick all the codecs or one by one and try again.

I have experienced problems with conflicting codecs or other applications on your PC that may be interfering with Movie Maker.

Hope this doesn't sound to complex, worth a try.

Hey How's it going seems to me you are lacking in the correct codecs TerraFirma is on the right track personally I had the same problem with vista running a lot of video files I had to find a good codec program because I do a lot of DVD copy legal of cause cough cough its paid for lol any way. You need to google a program K-lite codec pack and download this program how this program works is when you use any media related programs it adds the correct codecs to play any videos plays up 99% of any audio video programs trust me I use and I have not come across a file I can not play yet any way I hope I was some help to.

Ah ha - at last some limited success......Johnathon, took your advice and downloaded the new codecs program and voila, at least I can actually get the file into one of the programmes. So wish me luck. And thanks so much to everyone for all your suggestions. Knew I could rely on the experts when needed.

It sounds like you are already committed, but if you aren't you should seriously consider the Apple alternative. iMovie is a free application that is ideal for basic editing. When you feel you are up to it Final Cut Pro is a professional editor.

Like all Apple gear they are a very easy to use.
