Picking up a (new to us 2005 ST Patrol) on Friday. Vehicle has Nissan Heavy Duty tow bar and brakes and indicator plug but Vehicle has never towed trailers needing it to have electric brakes so I will have to fit one.

We had a Tsonka (sounds like) on our last towie but it was a pendulum type and easing to a stop at 10km put the caravan into lock up along with hoon like tyre screeches.

Is there a brake controller which senses th amount of pressure on the brake pedal and adjusts the caravan braking accordingly ? Which make how many $$ ?

Thanks
Benny

Sounds like your van brakes need adjusting.

Must agree. I tow a toolbox trailer (3tonne) most of the time and have the same controller in my GQ. Just a matter of a fine adjustment on the r/h side of the controller gives all the breaking I need. From travelling down the Walleroo cutting north of Injune (10degree slope on bitumen) to my brothers new gravel driveway, just adjust the knob on the side of the controller, no wheel skid.

I have a tekonsha prodigy which is inertia sensing (no pendulum). We tow a Jayco hawk and it works great. No lock ups, unless you adjust it way up.
they retail for about $299 but on the net you can get them for almost half that.

Prodigy works fine on my patrol. No lockups and very programmable to conditions.

Prodigy has been great for us, so either the Prodigy or it's upgrade the P3.

Thanks everybody for your input.

I had tried to adjust the wheel on the left side down and down and down. I eventually lost the squeal but by then the whole rig was working on just the towies brakes ... I could feel the c/v pushing me on, not pulling me back with its brakes.

I will persevere with my attempts and change over the brake controller to he new Patrol.
