Off to Cape Arid at the end of october for ten days or so for a spot of beach fishing and for the walk
trails and
wildflowers as
well.After suggestions for the best
camp sites in that area.Intend to fish
Poison Creek and surrounding beaches and have heard that the
camp sites there are good but also have heard good reports about the ones at
Thomas River.Having not been there all advice appreciated. Are there spots to
camp along
the beach at
Poison Creek?.Will be towing a camper trailer but have a lot of experience of south coast beach driving.Been down to 8 psi on occasions.
Thanks Graeme.

Thomas river def used to have the most pituresque campgrounds but a fire a few years back burnt it out but maybe its revovered by now?
latest report I heard was the beaches were very nasty after a winter of big swells.
cant specifically remember if there is much
camping along PC beach my gut feeling is not really but you could do a recce.

trails thomas river is
the spot with coastal walk
trails occross tagon point to dolphins beach and also one out to a

Hi Graeme,
Check with DEC in
Esperance whether the road is actually open! Was there last Dec, and it was closed due to the wet conditions.
Seal
Creek camping spot is just west of
Poison Creek and this is a nice sheltered spot amongst banksias and has a rainwater
tank. I understand that fires didn't destroy this
campsite.
If it's open, worth checking out is Thomas Fishery, just to the east of the cape, accessible from the
poison creek road (signposted at a
junction). This was burnt out about 4 years ago, but might have regenerated. A small but magic
camping spot on a small
turquoise bay with vehicle access to
the beach. There is fresh
water from a soak at the
campsite, or else tannin-coloured
water in a
creek about a km to the east of
the spot. DEC will advise if it's open or not. October might be a bit early anyway with quarantine because of wet conditions affecting the phytophthera in the area.
Thomas River is nice, but the higher
camping area got burnt out a while back, and now DEC has taken over the lower
campsite, but it's nice and protected. You can drive the 20km along
the beach from
Thomas River to Cape Arid, but
the beach might be a bit narrow this time of year. A couple of good walk
trails at
Thomas River, tho not sure if they've been burnt out. I've seen salmon running off
the beach, and whiting in the river.
This time of year, the banksias will be stunning. There is a DEC outpost at
Thomas River and
camping fees apply.
enjoy!
Gerry
