Hi Again,

As some of you would have read in my previous posts and wanted adds in the trader I have been chasing a Honda GX350 for a while now(2 stroke inverter generator). Anyway I came across a Honda EX500. I paid a bit more than I wanted to for it.

I had a mate who used to own a Honda dealership check it out and he reckons that its in absolute mint condition.

I have run it up with my CTEK 25 amp battery charger, and it runs it beautifully. So for all up, under $800, I have a emergency battery supply that weighs less than 12kgs(Generator and Charger).

I have two 80w panels on the roof of my van and 2 100ah agms. They have been working brilliantly while I have been away so far(NW WA). I haven't gone under 88% SOC. That's running a 100lt Engel upright compressor fridge 24/7.

The gen/charger is mainly for the car battery's when we are stationary for a while and in case there are lots of clouds about.

Hope it helps someone.

Hi Matt,

Sounds like a good system that works well for you.

I use a similar outfit with a 1kva Honda. Excuse my ignorance but what is a "SOC"?

Cheers Wilko.

Hi Wilko,

SOC = State of Charge. Thats how my solar controller measures my battery capacity.

I have been wondering if I can do similar with a Honda 650 gen. and a ctek 25 amp charger..Is it a fact that the Honda could provide enough power in 240v outlet to run the ctek ? It would be a hell of an advantage as the charge from the Honda 12v outlet is only 6.5 or 8.5? amps Thanks for the comment

Hi Murraji,

Yep, the 500w genny will definitely run my ctek 25amp charger.

I wouldn't use the 12 outlet from any generator as they are unregulated and cause damage to your battery's.

Certainly can, i use a ex650 with a ctek 25, and it works well.
Wont run 2 ctek 25's though, i think they draw about 300w.

The "12 volt DC Charging" outputs on any of the small generators are neither 12 volt, nor DC, nor good chargers.

"12 volts" - NO - they are a simple winding and the output can vary between 6 and 24 volts, depending on the generator RPM and the electrical load on this output.

"DC" - NO - it's simply rectified AC with an extremely high level of ripple which will damage devices needing DC.

"Charging" - NO - it's totally unregulated, so it'll damage your battery by overcharging them once they're full. All battery manufacturers specify a maximum ripple in fractions of a volt - the high ripple on unsmoothed rectified AC will shorten your battery's life.

Thanks to all for your input..I had contemplated buying a Christie charger as I had little faith in the charge from the Honda 650..My 2nd battery lasts only about 13 hours running the old engel..Not too good when I want to camp for a few days..So now to check out a Ctek charger..Thanks all
