We are new to WA and new to camping, we want to head off for Christmas, 2 adults, 1 infant. We need a soft experience with bubs and would like to be right by nice swimming water, either beach, river or lake? All the most popular grounds are full ofcourse. We are happy with a basic set up, don't need a bouncing pillow!!! or hot showers etc. running water might be good though! Just want a lovely location with family atmosphere. We are also interested in joining a camping club, does this happen, is there anyone out there that might have info for a club in Perth that does family style trips away?

Hi Gunnacit,
I can't help with a camping club as I'm not aware of any. Some suggestions include caravan parks in Hamelin Bay, Bremer Bay, Denmark or Prevelley [Margaret River]. National parks with suitable camp grounds include Leeuwin-Naturaliste NP and in particular Conto's Field or Point Rd; Blackwood River NP and in particular Sues Bridge or Warner Glen; D'Entrecasteaux NP and in particular Lake Jasper or Black Point; or Warren NP and in particular Heartbreak Trail. For the NP places check out www.dec.wa.gov.au and use the Park Finder for details on getting there, camping, etc. My pick for a caravan park would be Hamelin Bay or for a NP I'd go Heartbreak Trail or Conto's Field. Enjoy.

hi
hamelin bay is very nice too but what used to be a very large camping ground has now been over taken by chalets developement with only a handfull of camp sites left
the national parks are nice as mentioned above and it's hard to get into the np's because there has been a huge nuber of caravan parks wiped out by chalet and resort type accommodationin last 7yrs

but in the summer time for a small baby you will find it quiet hot in the bush and some insect problems mijjies /mosyie's but u will still get aussie mossies in augusta too just on sundown or anywhere for that mater because !!!! this is australia !!!!! and by all accts turners caravan park is also going to be reduced and changed with chalet development as well soon

I have to disagree with Barry.

Yes, there were 6 chalets built recently however there is still a huge amount of campground.

The park is well run and is the older basic type of park with a great atmosphere, 150 metres to the beach in a bay sheltered from the prevailing South easterlies that are a feature of Xmas down south.

Plenty of trees for sun control too.

hi gunnacit
turners cavavan park in augusta is a top spot right on the edge of theblackwood river/estuary and 250mtrs from the ocean under pepermint trees has a campers kitchen and bbq's etc and seldom gets extreme heat usually gets south breeze pm you would need to book now 08 97581593 www.turnerpark.com.au or flinders bay caravan park 3km's further south right on the beach www.flindersbaycaravanpark.com.au nice beach for kids or coombana bay bunbury www.discoveryholidayparks.com.au with nice family beach 100mtr
but you have to cross the road and the camping area is right up against a busy access rd trucks 24hrs when loading boats in bunbury so keep that in mind but it is a modern park
the 2 in augusta are very peacefull spots
on the new perth bunbury rd which is 9km's shorter now it's 1hr 30mins drive in unconjested traffic flow from perth center to bunbury then 146km to augusta
sorry cant help with clubs but try on google something sure to be on there cheers and good luck and happy camping

Hi there.
South of W.A.Bremer Bay and Peaceful bay are both great spots with nice caravan parks. If you stay at Bremer there are two caravan parks, the closest to the beach is better as most things are within walking distance.
Great fishing charters at Bremer too!

North of W.A.
Ledge Point and Seabird are both quiet spots on the beach with caravan parks. Seabird has a pub with nice meals and atmosphere.
Ledge Point only has a small shop with basic supplies.

Havn't heard of camping clubs. However there are plenty of 4wd clubs that go on trips together - Do you own a 4wd ???

Hope this helps.

Lived in Perth for a few years and tried the Christmas caravanning trip at Easter and Christmas in the SW.

NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!

I preferred North of Perth, might not be as nice but a hell of a lot more peaceful.

Its probably not too late to book into Denmark caravan parks. Most other places on the coast would be booked out by now.
Take a jumper.

Have fun

There are 4 caravan parks in Denmark, and if you want a site you'd better book now.

If you want to check them out, try googling the names.

1. Rivermouth Caravan Park. On the mouth of the Denmark River where it flows into Wilson Inlet. Largish park, grassed, some shade, quite a few permanent resident retirees in park homes Two Ablution blocks w/ laundry, camp kitchen,, small store on site, about 2km from town centre. May not be suitable for swimming.
(Best option IMHO)

2 . Ocean Beach Resort Caravan park. Large park, has recently been upgraded in some areas, park homes, some shaded areas, grass sites, store on site, adjacent to safe swimming in Prawn Rock channel, close to Ocean Beach for surf and strong swimmers, about 10km form town centre. Don't know about ablution blocks/laundry or campers kitchen. Bush surrounds.
(IMHO worth trying )

3 . Karri Mia Caravan Park. Near top of Mt Shadforth, great views over rural landscape, concrete slabs and own ensuite for each bay, about 8km from town, campers kitchen, No store on site, Onsite restaurant, close to a number of wineries. Reasonable shelter but can be windy at times.
(IMHO, only if there is nothing else available)

4 . Riverbend Caravan Park. Small park on banks of Denmark river, about 5km from town, no store on site, some shaded sites, Ablution and laundry on site,
Usually a quiet park even at Xmas,
(IMHO worth a look)

There's a fair bit to do in Denmark over the Xmas/new Year period and plenty to see within a 25 km range of town.

Hope this helps

A bit more information to consider.
Denmark is a good 5 hour drive south of Perth via Albany Hwy to Mt Barker, then south to Denmark, or about 6.5hours via Bunbury, Bridgetown, Manjimup, Walpole to Denmark.

Disco, again.

G'day gunnacit, try www.waroonavillage.com.au/ A well kept secret in this town is the fresh water lake created by the weir down stream from the original Waroona Dam now Lake Navarino. The weir is about a 5 minute drive from the caravan park. Preston Beach is a pleasant 25klm drive to the west. The town also boasts a heated indoor pool at the Recreation Centre not far from the park. Happy camping. Regards Pauper.
