Depending on the response here, also have a look on ausjeepoffroad.com (au) and secondly on jeepforums.com (us)
They have lots of knowledge about model year specifics.
Generally Jeeps tow
well, drink like a 4WD ;) and spares are easy to source locally or ship in from the US very cheaply.

I have a 2007 CRD Cherokee - Just did 6 week tour ( see my blog ) - 10,000 Kms
Jeep never missed a beat - towed our little POD camper with no trouble -
Jeep on its own did between 9.5 and 10.5 Litres per 100 Kms -
With trailer between 13 and 14 L / 100 Km and up the Stuart into a head wind
around 15.5 L / 100 Kms ..
I bought a spare fan belt , and top and bottom radiator hoses before leaving cost $300.00 - They just got in the way but was nice to know I had them ..
Never used Low range as I didnt go anywhere it was needed .. Did first 200 K of
Oodnadatta Track and the
Mereenie Loop and tracks into around and out of
Birdsville - No bother at all..
Great 4WD ... I love it ..
Rgds

Gidday Mandrake thanks for getting back to me. I have done a fair bit of research to date and so far so good but it is always better to get it from the horses mouth so to speak, as dealers tend to tell 'porkies' to secure a sale. Our Coromal off roader comes in at 1400 kg so i suppose it may use a bit more fuel than yours did, but i have heard they have good pulling power and are rar more economical than the petrols. We are selling up early 2011 and intend doing the 'Lap' of Aussie for a few year so that is why we are upgrading from our current 1998 XJ 2.5 TD.
Regards John.
