The Royal Society of Victoria is commemorating the Burke and Wills Expedition during 2010–2011 by conducting another one in its footsteps. This environmental expedition will be led by Jonathan King (a descendent of original expeditioner John King) and aboriginal leaders along the way. They will be conducting a comparative survey of observations made by the original expedition. Taking place between August 2010 and June 2011, highlights will include: 20 August 2010 – start at Royal Park, Melbourne, and travel north via Moonee Ponds (the former home of Birds Australia), crossing into NSW at Swan Hill, following the Darling River to Menindee, travelling through Mootwingee National Park, Cooper Creek and Birdsville, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn near Boulia, following the Flinders and Bynoe Rivers to reach the Gulf near Karumba, and south again through the Strzelecki Desert, returning to Cooper Creek to visit the Dig Tree and Breerily Waterhole in June 2011.
I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

That will be something to look forward to seeing next year. I always enjoy reading some of the descriptions of the departure of the expedition from Melbourne with camels and of course all the Pomp and Circumstance of the era. They certainly did things in style (initially anyway).

I wonder if any connections can be made with the aboriginal people who sustained King in the Cooper Creek area?

Hi

Thanks for posting this item.

Do you have information about where I can read more about it and perhaps follow their progress online?

I sure would like to go on a trip like this but I guess it requires membership of the Royal Society which probably means a PhD in Science and a Nobel Prize.

Cheers
Phil

Could post number here but not sure people involved would appreciate it without getting their permission first.

Dont worry Phil,

Learned a few things in life, one being:

The more letters a man has after his name does not mean he has a lot more common sense.

I hope the re-enactment does not slavishly follow the real thing - a happy ending would be much more preferable.
