2013Terry
I have just purchased a 2003 Sahara Diesel 4.2 fitted with a Intercooled Turbo chip set and 3" exhaust. As I intend on using it for extended touring, pulling a 19' caravan I need to ask a few questions.
Q1. It has a 5 speed auto trans - should all towing be carried out in 4th gear max
Q2. Will I need to fit an Auto Trans cooler
Q3. Previous owner has since new only used Castrol RX Super motoroil 103K's - your
views on this oil would be appreciated
Regards

Q1-you will get much comment on this and no one will agree. my 2 cents-5th in an auto doesnt have the same weakness as a manual. So if engine handles it, why not?
Q2-No-these cruisers are renowned for towing and I havent heard of anyone fitting a cooler. The A750F auto has proven to be an outstanding transmission. A friend who owns one of these as
well as a 4WD repair
shop hasnt come across one failing yet.
Q3-Any oil that meets the specs (CF from memory) or better is suitable. The idea that some people have that using a particular brand for a long time then changing will cause harm is frankly ridiculous.

Hi Terry, I had a 97 model petrol 80 series Cruiser up till last xmas untill I bent it and had to get a nother one. I found that when towing in overdrive the vehicle ever so slowly slowed down. I then had to drop it out of overdrive to get back up to cruising speed. I also found that I used more fuel so I eventually just left the overdrive off.
I now have a 96 model 80 series Turbo diesel and have towed the van several times but only for short distances but I and begining to think that with the turbo the same applies but when the going is flat then overdrive might be OK.
I am just about to go on the next holiday and it will include a lot of hills and probably 3000 km distance. It is only the 4 speed auto in the 80 series but it still
places the same overdrive load on your engine in the 100 series auto so you will probably need to try it with and without overdrive engaged to see for yourself as I have done, despite being told on many fora and in other locations that not using overdrive when towing is best. Fuel consumption is the biggest problem not the gearbox as the auto gearbox is as strong as an Ox from what I have read on this
forum and elsewhere.
Hope this is of some help Terry.
Regards, Bruce.

Bruce and all
Best thing to do is select power mode and let it do its own thing, it wont go into overdrive under 100km/hr or unless you are off the throttle, and will change at higher revs that suits the situation.....

Hi terry. I'm fairly sure the 5speeds come with a factory fitted auto cooler. It should be out the front,RH side behind the grille. Bob.

When Toyota changed to their 5 speed auto box there was a strong rumour getting around that the auto was a direct copy of the Mitsubishi Pajero auto anyway apart from that in my vehicle once I am on flat road I tow in 5th once there is a rise,
hill or a little more omph is required I use 4th. I think towing in 4th leaves my torque converter locked up longer so if there is no
hill & straight f/way or hwy pop it into 5th. I have had numerous turbo diesels & I use Penrite or Pennzoil turbo O think the secret to the life of any vehicle is regular oil & filter change & good quality oil. Toyot service centre or your hand book will tell you about transmission cooler but I would be surprised if not standard.

"a direct copy of the Mitsubishi Pajero auto"
heard lotsa Toyota rumours but thats a new one on me!
Seems an odd one as its hard to see a major company waiting for a competitors new tranny to come on the road, waiting to see if its any good, copying it and tooling up doesnt seem likely for a company with such a big R&D section of its own?

I have a GXL with the same mods
I ALWAYS tow in 4th and am 28,000k into this trip
I have an Exhaust gas temp fitted and it runs 75deg cooler in 4th
Runs at 325-350 degC at 90kph in 4th
Drop it into OD and temp immediately goes up to over 400C on a light throttle.
Saves wear on the trans clutches if it doesnt hunt up and down as
well
Fuel consumption is the same
It already has an oil cooler in front of radiator
If its not using oil and its within specs keep using it.
I use Penrite HPR 15 Diesel
Check if it has Polyairs fitted as some Saharas have self levelling
suspension and need them to compensate for extra weight making it try to adjust all the time.
There are old threads on here about all of this.

I too have a 100 td auto. I do not have an exhaust gas temp gauge but interesting to see these figures. Ive towed van around oz also in 4th (5th/drive across the paddock). Toyota told me to tow in drive and it will sort it self out. Cant be too careful, however my dad towed his 24 ft around in drive the whole way with no problems except for up hills where it could not make up its mind. I would probably still stick with 4th most of time.

I read somewhere that RX Super has been discontinued...a popular oil replacement has been
Caltex Delo 400. I use it, it seems good.

It's my belief that RX Super is for Americam engines.
There are previous posts discussing the "oil" issue and references to other material on the net. From memory (not good) our engines need high "Ash" and high "Detergent" levels in the additives.
Delo 400 is apparently good for Japanese Turbo diesels, also Castrol J-max (but it may have been dis-continued) - Last drums I bought were only $88.00 (but it was late 2005.

There is a lot of hype regarding oils on Toyota diesels.
The way I see it (just my opinion):
#1 These 1HD-FTE motors do not "wear out" in the average owner's lifetime. Sure you can do a lot of damage from overheating etc, but thats nothing to do with oil.
#2 A lot of this hype was generated from the Big End Bearing problems with the 1990-1994 1HDT diesels. This problem was solved back then and is irrelevant to the modern motors.
I don't fuss about brand of oil. The recommended oil change interval and factory filters is my preference. The later CI-4 diesel engine oils are way above the Toyota recommendation of "CF or above" and are purchased at a reasonable price.
Out of interest, Castrol no longer recommend a diesel engine oil for this motor. They suggest the standard Magnatec 10-40 or Edge 5W30 which are both CF. The dealers having been using CF grade oils for years.

Would say that dealers dont exactly use top grade oils either.
The oil that Toyota use or sell to you for these is a generic Toyota badged
container with "Suitable for petrol and diesel engines" on the label.

I was thinking of getting something similar so am interested to know what you paid, how many k's, what accesories & general condition & whether private sale or thru dealer etc, if it's not too rude a question.

Hi Paul
I possibly have paid 2 much but I recon she's a good one and I just had to have it. The combination of Sahara Diesel 4.2 Turbo's seem to be quite difficult to find. Plenty of GLX' Diesel turbo's & V8's.
As I stated
mine is 11/12/2003 103 K's One owner, Intercooled Diesel, 3" Sahara Exhaust System, Sahara Cip Set, Sahara front bull bar with twin Light Force spotties. Full Toyota service history from day one with every service chit in the book stamped on time. Also copies of every dealer service sheet showing labour parts and all extra work done.
I thought if I dont grab this it's not going to last 2 long.
Damage $61,000
Regards Terry
