I am visiting a friend in Townsville next week for her 18th and we have plans to go camping for a couple of days while I'm up there. Are there any nice campsites that are;

Not overly busy
Fires permited (not neccesary but definately preferred)
2WD accessable
Near Creek/River/Dam/Beach (not neccesary but preferred)

I don't mind if there's like a 1 or 2hr drive but close is good.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mat

Mat....while fires are not permitted I recommend Alligator Creek camping area in Bowling Green National Park. The turnoff is about 20 km south of Townsville off the Bruce Highway and it's a further 6km to Alligator Creek. Great facilities, great bushwalking and of course the creek. GPS coords are 19d20m0sS 140d56m43sE. From my perspective this is a 5 star campsite.

Paluma Dam about 100km NW of Townsville was sensational the last time I was up that way, about 4 years ago. Spectacular drive up over the range to get there too.

Cheers

I think you will find that most of Queensland is under a complete fire ban at

the moment and there have been fires in that area already.

I would second Rollingstone - its right on the beach, has some new amenities for campers, and a huge shady area for campers. The vans are all up one end, some have ensuite sites as well. Near some good trips up to Paluma etc

Paluma Dam is also great- and can get in there with 2wd- but can be a bit bumpy- make sure not alot of rain in on the horizon. You can get firewood up there from the ranger- but not sure about the fireban situation

Alligator creek, but can get a bit rough. THere is no longer a full time ranger there so there has been some vandalism.

Jourama Falla also north is great as well. Nice shady sites, national park , and a toilet. Road in is good. You can hike to falls and creek.

Gees Alligator Ck must have detiorated...I was there about 18 months ago and while there was no on site ranger then the place was clean, tidy, uncluttered and with great facilities. Makes you wonder about some people eh?

My friend went out to alligator creek this afternoon and had a look. she's showing me photos at the moment. She said the grounds themselves aren't the greatest but the place looks beautiful

The boat ramp area at Giru (1/2hr sth Townsville) is 2wd accessible, not overly busy, on the banks of the river (Herbert I think???) fires permitted when there is no fire ban and good crabbing and fishing to boot.

Check the places section of this site for "funny dunny park" sth of Home Hill, if it is dry you will get 2wd there but be careful of beach access points as they are sandy. This is isolated but a very nice spot for camping without interuptions from anyone else. If you have troubles finding this places in places, reply and I will give clearer directions. Make sure it has not been raining as it will be slippery if it has been.

Have fun and pack the dingers LOL!!!

Cheers, Trevor.

That's the one Roger, thanks. I too was thinking of Groper Ck but without a boat there is not much to do there from my memory, at least a bit further down at Wunjunga (where the "Funny Dunny Park" is located) you can go for long strolls along the beach among "other things" ;-)) (brooksie said he wanted isolated that's the main reason I suggested Wunjunga, huge chance he will be there all by himself at that time of year.)

Bonus at Groper Ck is the ammenities and power if you so need, and at that time of year prawns and fish from the jetty. Come to think of it, that's good enough reason to put Groper Ck on top of the list hehehe.

Thanks again,
Trevor.

A bit confusing when your original post of the 10th says you are going next week.

Will probably be even worse by mid November.

How about Broadwater State Forest near Ingham. Lots of grass, shade and a rainforest creek.
