I'm intending to purchase a Jayco Expanda in the coming months and would like to know if it is possible to put a bike rack on the rear or on to the front draw bar. If on the front it will increase the towball weight. At the rear there doesn't appear to be a chassis sufficient enough to weld any support brackets to. I know that at both ends it will interfere with the drop down beds etc.. Any suggestions? (apart from carrying inside the van)
regards

If you are coming to Qld it is illegal to fit a bike carrier or any thing else to a trailer that extends the overhang. Bike racks, jerry cans, spare tyres & the whole lot that go beyond the rear bar are illegal if fitted after registration.
Not sure about what is put on the drawbar.
Only put your bikes on the outside of your vehicle if you aren't going to ride them. They will get well & truley wrecked out there.
My wife & I ride nice road bikes & we recently did a 1000klm trip with our bikes inside our wagon on quick release fittings. It is quite possible, irregardless what people think.

Sorry that should have read that we did a 10,000 klm trip. It included about 2,500 to 3,000 klm of dirt roads & the bikes were unscathed.

As the addition of the rack and any bikes will (obviously) increase weight on the van/chassis/axles/suspension/wheels/tyres, I would strongly suggest that you consult with Jayco since they are the people who engineered and built your van and would be most suited (qualified) to answer your question(s).

Dosmos
I have an expanda hardlid and there not many options. I have seen the white bumper bar removed and gal slid into the chassis but I would not do it. Go to http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/expandaownersaustralia/ and join the forum and their alots of modfiication pictures which can help you.

Hi DOSMOS,

I had a Windsor Rapid, similar to an Expanda, and put a bike rack on the front draw bar. It needed to be removable to allow the beds to be set up and as I couldn't find anything on the market that was suitable so built one myself. Although these pics only show 2 small bikes, you could also fit another 2 full size bikes.

While this worked very well, I now have a Camper Trailer that has a swing away bike carrier on the rear. This is much easier to use as the bikes can stay on the rack for an overnight stop, they simply swing to the side and out of the way. If I had my time again, I would add a swing away carrier to the front of a van. The problem with bikes at the rear is that you cannot see if they are working loose, can be a real problem when off-road.

I have an expanda hardlid and have fitted a fiamma bike rack to the A frame. It tilts out of the way to allow the bed down. Bikes need to be removed though.

Bikes stand upright in a channel and are tied to an upright frame. I turn the handle bars parallell with the bike's frame.

It is made of aluminium so really the weight of the bikes is all you're adding to the ball weight. It doesn't reduce the turning circle of the car either.
Can only fit 2 bikes on it as the space for the rack to fit is tight between the jockey wheel and the gas cylinders.

I have carried three bikes on the A frame of our expanda with a fold down type bike rack and a bit of metal fabrication and that was fine until we changed bikes and they would no longer fit. So I then carried them on top of the tow vehicle but needed to remove the front wheels and I also found that they took up most of the roof rack space and I only used them when camped in the one spot for some time as it was a pain setting them up. plus i had to carry the front wheels in the car. So now I am in the process of fitting a custom made A frame aluminium box with 3 bike carriers on the lid and the gas bottles inside the vented box. It means I need to remove the bikes to drop the front bed down but then I use them. The spare tyre then needs to be carried elsewhere and I am considering fitting it up under the floor eventually but normally carry it on the roof rack anyway. See it is kind of impossible to get a flat tyre on the van and not have the vehicle with me and it is not impossible to get two flats when out in the vehicle by itself but then I haven't had a flat for about 200,000 kms anyway but will probably get 4 tomorrow now!
Anyway if this system doesnt work I can always get either a Basestation or a dual cab cab chasis and I have contemplated both on many occasions.
