Hi all,
Thinking of taking the van across to Tassie in early May next year for a couple of weeks. Can anyone let us know what the weather and conditions will be like. We try to free camp as much as possible.
Many thanks
John & Helen

May will be cool/crisp days, cold nights, occasional grey skies, occasional sunny days, some times windy.
But hey; there is no such thing as bad weather down here, just inappropriate clothing.
Plenty of free camping, and you should have most of the beach to yourselves.
It will be dark early that time of the year, suggest using a gas lantern in the van for extra warmth at night.
Hope you have a great time here.
cheers

If you are going to use a gas lantern to help with the heat, don't forget to leave your vents open :)

You also won't see much in 2 weeks. Considering the cost of the ferry over & back you would get better value for money if you did at least 4 weeks.
You can free camp in most Forestry Tas reserves unless signposted. There are also freee areas at most of the hydro dams and many beach areas.
May can be funny weather but on average its cool nights, sunny days with a lazy breeze.

Did 6 weeks this year and still missed a lot

a couple of weeks will be short

weather was very variable , sun today and snow at Cradle tomorrow

lots of free camping

if you plan to go to a few national parks get a holiday pass as it can cost $22 each entry in some parks ( Cradle mountain for example )

Most , nearly all , caravan parks are $20 to $25 a night

If you leave in May it will be shoulder season for the boat and return in June it will be off season , check as a week can make the difference

May is the start of the off season, according to the Spirit of Tasmania folk,

we left on the 2nd of May this year for a visit to our son, the fares were 50% of normal, which sealed it for us,
did we enjoy the night crossing?
that's a different question..
LOL

LOL...
we paid for a tiny 4 berth, there were 3 of us,
no way were we trying to sleep on those seats upstairs...which is what our son decided to do when he moved there, said it was freezing AND noisy..l had a look and l couldn't imagine anyone getting any sleep up there,

worked nightshift the night before...didn't try and sleep that day so l could sleep on the boat that night, even took a couple of pills to make sure..still couldn't sleep with the boat rocking in the swell and the engines vibrating,

had a really good sleep in the car on the way to Hobart next morning though,
LOL
spoke to a lot of people since and they've nearly all had much the same experience,
lady from work flew back on the way back instead of going back with her husband and their new 4wd and van,

and there is only night sailings in 'winter'

A couple of weeks is not enough time.
I spent nearly 4 weeks down there a few years back covered 4,000 km's and only scratched the surface.
Tassie is brilliant allow a lot more time if you can.

Hi John and Helen

We went to Tassie May/June this year - we LOVED it, the free camping is awesome (they really cater for the travelling public) some places were really cold (mind you we are QLD'rs and like the heat!!!) it did snow whilst we were there and we did Cradle Mtn on mothers day wearing parka's, beanies and skarves!! we got a frost in Oatlands. We purchased a ceramic heater to run off the gennie (poor Matt would have to get up in the freezing morning to turn the gennie on!!!)

If you have a diesel heater that would be good, I personally would not travel to Tassie in a camper trailer at that time of year.

Cheers
Caz
