Evening all, without going into the split rim vs one piece debate, I am looking at replacing the tyres on the troopy and was looking at the Bridgestone 694's or the Hankook AT. Could those that are running split rims please give me some feedback as to the overall performance of these or other brands if they have had a good run from them.

Thanks

Mark

You will have no problems running them on splits, just make sure you get GOOD tubes, I run Dueler A/S 661 LT235/85R16 10 PLY Rating, this time round, you can see why on my blog "New Tyres For the Troopy".

They have only done about 10,000 km so far, the last set of Dunlop Roadgrippers type "S" where 235 x 85 x 16 on Split Rims and they were OK I was going for another set but read the Blog.

I would find it hard to see the difference between 7.50 16R and 235 x 85 x 16 in construction.

Thanks Richard, The troopy has duellers on at the present and the tyre places say that the 661 is not being produced anymore and the 694 has replaced it. One tyre place wants $395 plus $50 for the tube (in WA). Most are around the $330 mark plus tube.

Cheers

I'm not saying for you to buy them, I was just saying I have them.
They are still getting made there are over 600 in Perth today as we speak. I think you will find the tyre places mean 643 the 964 is the latest tyre and the one they want to sell.

One phone call to Bridgestone will answer that question.

Mine (661) cost $302.90 each 6 off tubes B/stone 750/16 JS75 $27.62 each fitting and balance $16.50 each this was on the 27/04/2009 at Bruce Rock Tyre Centre.

Cheers

Mark,
For many years and thousands of kilometers have been running split rims on my troopys and would not run anything else.Over the years I have tried different tyres but have found I got the best overall performance with the Hankook 235/85/16 AT.Ihave just completed 19000kms over the top and into N.Queensland with the Hankooks giving no trouble. It was interesting to note that Ihad to replace two worn back tyres in Cairns but the Hankooks were not available without an order from Adelaide so I ended up putting on Yokohama Geolander AT in the same size so I'll see how they go.As said make sure you get good quality tubes as the cheapies will fail over the rough stuff. You should get 60-70thousand k's on the Hankooks and remember that the Kingstar tyre is the identical tyre but a bit cheaper.

Our 2000 Troopy door plaque says 750-16R tyres on the split rims. I have been told that the "R" is radial construction.

Also in the olden days before radials, we all ran cross plys on one piece rims.

We are now running 235/85-16 Copper All Terrian's on our split rims - no problems.

Yes running rags is pretty much non compliant

and yes you can run radials on splits no worries but from running both ive found that radials on one peices using plugs for punctures and rags on splits using patches is the best combos

get outmore stated – “split rims are for cross ply tyres, 1 peice are for radials”

This sort of waffle is typical epinion
My 2008 Troopy came with Toyota’s standard issue split rims and Dunlop Road Grippers 7.50 R16 Steel Radials.

its actually not just waffle its opinion gained by a fair bit of experience running splits and one peices as well as radials and rags.

yes of course you can run radials on splits but from my experience its not the best combo.

i run 235x85x16 goodyear MTRs on one peice rims for general touring and 7.5x16 14 ply rags on splits for bushwork

exactly what advantage do you think you get running radials on splitties with tubes?

You made a silly statement that “split rims are for cross ply tyres”.
I noted that this was waffle.
As for the debate on the advantages of split rims with tubes – it’s been done to death and the pros and cons of fatties against skinnies and splits against single piece rims will go on for ever.

I dont know how different rims with different tyres could make any difference. Manufacturers have been putting radials on splits for as long as radials became popular.

All Split Rim owners,
Can some one give me a specific brand/size/Part number for the "Good Quality Tubes".
I've driven on splits for 25 years and see no problem however, tube quality is an issue as the ones I've been getting are crap to those I used when driving Landrover 110's in uniform.

basically bridestone, michelin

if you dont emand them (they may have to get them in) you will get much cheaper tubes and they fail easily and dont accept patches

The original tyres on my 03 Hilux were 694s with Bridgestone tubes on split rims. They finally wore out a few months ago but the tubes still look like new. I am currently using Michelin.

I was talking to Mick Hutton from Beadell Tours last year and I asked him what type of tubes he uses with his MRF tyres. He could not remember the brand but described them as "heavy duty Chinese" then added "not all things out of China are rubbish".
