Hi oldpop, I use it with the GPS so I can see on the map to where I am and what is around aws it moves with the position I am at. Very handy I think.

Further to that its basically Garmins version of OziExplorer (assuming you know what OziExplorer does) - but can only be used with garmin maps (same as on garmin gps units). Turns your laptop into a big screen GPS.
I think Mapsource use to have the moving map function but it was removed on newer versions and nRoute replaced it. nRoute is now superceded by Garmin Mobile PC, which unfortunately costs money and apparently doesnt work with as many mapsets as the older free nRoute. Not even sures its available in Aus..anyway..All good fun
Cheers

No expert on subject - I have never used nRoute but yes you are correct in general terms. There are however a few tricks of the trade with which I am not familiar. For example there may be an issue with the type of gps inputting data. It may have to be outputting data in garmin protocol (as apposed to normal NMEA). Others may help with this. I am lead to believe you can use another small program that modifies any gps data to garmin format.
Can others help on this?
Cheers

Found this thread on another
forum - knew it rang a bell
nRoute Thread gpsaustralia
Looks like if you use a non garmin gps best to use a program called gpsgate, though doenst appear to be free but pretty cheap.

Oldpop, I am using a 276 with only land maps. I swapped the blue
water maps for the topo.
I used the nroute on the older computer but I could not transfer to the new one.
Cheers Damien

Gday Damien,
I have been through this exercise with Garmin quite extensively and after 3 months of stuffing around, it doesn't work! nRout is discontinued.
I was advised by Garmin to use Mobile PC with a gps 18 and after many hours on the phone with Garmin techs we gave up and Garmin sent me a Nuvi 765 to compensate for the messing around.
I and another member Doug T have used these Nuvi's with Aus Toppo in some of the remotest parts of Arhnemland and find them extremely accurate. If I had of stayed with the laptop idea I am now sure the lap top would have fallen to bits in this type of country. The touch screen is an advantage on a gps, where as you don't have it on the laptop. Try driving with one hand, operate a keyboard with the other, in bull dust 400mm deep.
I hope my is of some help for you.
Noel K.
