Hi All
I have a 20L Bushranger Stainless Steel Jerry Can (
http://www.bushranger.com.au/jerry_can.php). Neither the screw cap nor breather screw appear to be made of stainless steel - I'm not even sure they are made of the same thing.
After not using for a coupe of years (it was stored empty but with the cap on, has only ever had tap
water in it), I went to take off the cap, and cannot budge it. I've given it a few taps with a hammer, and run it under hot
water, but nothing.
The breather screw I was able to undo as it has a slotted head - and it shows heavy corrosion - with the thread very rough in part. It is not rusty - more heavily pitted.
Does anyone know what the caps on these tanks are made of?
Any tips/tricks for geting it undone?
Is this a warranty issue? Or am I to blame for storing it with the cap on?

Sounds like it may have an aluminium bung.
You could try freezing the bung with one of those freezing sprays you can buy at Repco and other
places.
Just freeze the bung I'd suggest wrapping a hot wet rag around the outside of the bung to keep the rest of it warm.

If they are aluminium there is a electrolysis process set up that corrodes the aluminium.

Perhaps a Stilson and tap it with a hammer to see if it will shift it.
Then get some plastic bungs.

Tim,
The web site you reference states a 5 year no fuss warranty so if it is less than that you should be OK.

If that doesn't work try a bigger hammer.
Don't be shy with ity Tim. Lay into it.

Yeh - saw that. Have just spent an hour searching for the receipt - no luck. Very frustrating. I have emailed Bushranger now and hopefully they'll be accommodating.
When you
fork out over $150 for a Jerry can - you kinda want to get more than one trip out of it!

Maybe you could turn it upside down and spray a Lanolin based substance on the thread...hopefully it will penetrate the gummed-up seal.... That's assuming the freezing idea doesn't work.
Man, $150- for a jerry can!!!! I'd be piisssed off......

I have either the same or very similar product. It came with two screw caps. One looks like aluminium and was for fuel only. The other is made out of plastic and is used when the jerry can holds
water.
I got
mine around July 2009. Did you get two caps or only one? If only one, maybe there has been a later change to supply two caps with those sold now.
Mine has only been used for
water and is used with the plastic cap. No problems to date.

That's interesting Flynnie. I was only ever give 1 cap - and I'm guessing it is the aluminium one - as shown on the can in the picture on their website. I wonder if the plastic cap has emerged as a result of this problem. I bought
mine around 3 years ago.
If I could get the bloody thing loose, perhaps bushranger could just supply a plastic cap? In fact if the'yd supply the cap, I'd be more inclined to get stuck into the aluminium cap with a hacksaw to create a slot to get more leverage and hopefully crack it loose. I only want to use it for
water - and a plastic cap would suit fine.
Thanks for the lead.

Tim
Just checked
mine is a Bushranger. Have not located the instructions but have found everything else. The supplied metal cap appears to be cast aluminium. I recall the instructions say if the metal cap was used with
water there could be an unpleasant taste in the
water or words to that effect. My guess is that there is a chemical reaction between the dissimilar metals ie stainless steel and aluminium. My guess is also that you have a bad case of this chemical reaction and it has stuck your cap to your jerry can real tight.
I would suggest contacting Bushranger (are they not associated with ARB?) and asking for their help before doing anything really brutal to the cap. Also the fact that there are now two caps supplied is a pretty good indication that there have been past issues when only one cap was supplied. Perhaps they could supply new caps and some tips on how to get the stuck cap off as I doubt you would have been the first to report this problem.
Good luck!

Hi Tim,
Could you "drill" a slot in the cap then insert a screwdriver or flat bar. It may work.
Cheers Wilko

Penetrene .. is the go...
Stand the thing upside down on it's lid, and squirt some 'round the thread..
Depending on the severity of the corrosion, it may take from several hours to several days, but it'll loosen that cap!
With care, you should be able to avoid getting any inside the jerry, but in any case, it'll wash out with detergent (followed by a thorough rinse, of course;-))

Spoke with Warranty Department at Kingsley Enterprises who sell Bushranger products. They confirmed problem is electrolysis of aluminium, and that this problem was identified some time ago and resolved through the provision of a plastic lid for use when Jerry Can used for
water storage.
I have been advised to return to place of purchase for replacement. Apparently the product has not been on the market for 5 years yet, so they are happy to replace without receipt.
Assuming all goes
well at place of purchase, looks like this one all resolved.
