OutBack Travel September.

Ok, I own a 90`s model Hilux D/Cab 2.8D turbo.
Went to Big Red (Start of Simpson Desert) Just out of Birdsville.
Guy and Wife in a Jackaroo from memory were there ready to head off into the simpson Desert across to Mt Dare.
I asked have you let local authorities know of your ETA to Mt Dare ?
Nah ! I`ve been across here before We`ll be right mate.
Off he goes over Big Red and into the desert ? What The ?
Embarrasing part was – I`ll have a go at this hill in the hilux. Got half way up and ran out of steam and bogged in. Well lucky I could back out down hill.
But I had 130ltrs of fuel,80ltrs water, and ½ a ton of camping junk in the tray.
Mate in his 4.5 ltr Patrol just as loaded went straight over, but had to let his tyres down to get back.
Well , what did I here for the following week, Get a Patrol ! Get a Patrol ! Get a Patrol !.

Went through the Birdsville track to marree through the dust storm that Eastern Australia copped.
My 12 mth old windscreen is now stuffed, from being sandblasted.

Travelled from Oodnadatta towards Marla, Hit a dust storm and then a rain storm behind it. For 30kms we drove through a water filled road up t o 500mm deep, some sections were 4 or 5 hundred mtrs long. Very slippery and lucky to get through. It would have been worse to try and return to Oodnadatta.
Left Oodnadatta 4.30pm, got to Marla 11.30pm.
Well, My New Brake pads and drums are now stuffed, from small stones getting in through missing rubber grommets on the backing plates.
Also had to buy a new centre bearing as a stone managed to get in between the bearing and the housing. The tailshaft forced it through the the rubber section.
Worse thing was I replaced it just weeks before leaving just to be sure.

Get this , Aileron NT, Unleaded $1.85, Diesel $2.05 What the ? But did`nt need fuel.

What is the Difference between 10hr rate and 20hr rate in AGM batteries ?

Got to Emerald Late. Using Garmin Topo searched Lodging for camping parks found 2 close by. 1st address took me to a culdesac with nothing but houses, 2nd address took me to an industrial area, nothing but factories ?. Well we got a motel and found it without the Garmin..

Todays Fridge test. Ambient Temp ranged from 21 to 30deg
Both empty side by side in sun
Engel has insulation cover, Liemack Covered with ply to keep sun off.
Running both consumes average 12.5 amps/hr using a digital dc amp/meter

We met a Bloke in Heavitree gap Park in Alice who had a 70`s Camping Travel Book, Which had a B/W picture of a Kombi Van parked outside this huge cave (Wombat Cave) which is apparently on the Northern side of Ayres Rock. It looks like you could park a semi trailer in there.
He said , Today there is no mention of this huge cave andwalking tracks going nowhere near it as it is an Aboriginal sacred site. I also did a google search and found nothing.

Has anyone bought and used the ebay XGSF-1000 yamaha copy generator ?.

Well`, I `ve always said to myself, I will never buy imported prawns from Woollies.
What did I get today – imported medium prawns $8.88kg ate the lot.
Aussie King prawns were $30kg

Don`t pick on my punctution.
Cheers

Well, what happened to the guy and his wife in the jackaroo?
I was waiting for the punch line....
Won't pick on your "punctution" but spell check could be your friend - it's " punctuation" :)

".........have you let local authorities know of your ETA to Mt Dare ? "

You are not exactly on your own on that trek. It's getting to be like Toorak Road.

Hi, Allan.

I don`t know much about crossing the simspon, But I`m sure I`ve read somwhere that you should hire or have HF radio`s, travell with another vehicle, and let Birdsville or Mt Dare Pub or somone know of your travel plans.
Perhaps it`s not as bad as people make it out to be.

Cheers

He probably would have got airborne and then rolled it.
Then I would have to rescue him somehow.

Mrbrush,

The appropriate tyre pressure is the most important factor for getting over sand hills (especially Big Red). There is no doubt that horsepower and speed play an important part but when you get the tyre pressure right it is a lot easier.

It took me a few goes (at Big Red) trying different speeds/gears before I finally dropped the tyres down to 20 psi and up I went.
(2.8D turbo Triton loaded up like your Lux).

I'll bet your Hilux could do it as well.
