I need some new tyres for a cape trip and was thinking of going up from 275x70x16 to Maxxis Bighorn 285x75x16.
I have a 2 inch lift but otherwise standard.
The other option is the 265x75x16 which is only slightly taller but may be less likely to
puncture.
Do you think I will have any clearance, fuel consumption issues etc.
Regards
Geoff

Geoff,
I run 6 285 75 16's with out a drama(2 spares). Your speedo will be out a bit(speedo 95 actual speed 100). Your fuel consumption will be a little heavier than splits and you will have a little less power than driving on split rim size tyres. You are already running 275 70 16's so I don't reckon you will notice any difference. I have a 2 inch lift, but had 285's on before my previous 80 was lifted with no probs.

I recently did the same - and then changed them to 265/75 16's the very next day.... My 80 has the 1HZ in it and the bigger tyres caused too much of a drop in power - it was barely able to accelerate to 110 - without towing.....Even the slightest
hill would cause it to slow down (all speeds measured on a gps). Clearance would be fine - and they look great..... If your 80 has a peterol or turbo it would be a different story (i would think...)

I had no issues with going to 285's when I had my 80, (1990 TD model). Found that once I had adjusted for the speedo error, bigger tyres didn't make any noticeable difference to fuel consumption, when I swithced from a AT tread to a MT tread, there was a slight increase.

I run the same tyres on my TD 80. You lose half a gear at best, 1st is too low on road anyway. The pros far outway the cons. If yours is a TD as
well, I went 3 inch exhaust system soon after and would say the gains of adding it cancelled out the tyre power loss. The Bighorns have been great for me, handle
well for a mud and wearing
well. Enjoy.
