new Hema Navigator

hi all,

has anyone heard about this?

WA rep visited the camping store my wife works at and informed her that a new navigator is being released to replace current model. This is to combat existing problem with European satellite reception (apparently keeps dropping out, first I've heard of it). Is going to retail for about 1300 bucks ! quite a big price hike if ya ask me!

I believe the new Hema navigator hits the stores next month and will retail for $990 (no change from current). It has a larger 5 inch screen. You can also get deals on the current model for around the $650 at the moment. I saw a poster on the 4WD folder at work the other day. Don't know about the drop out problem but most GPS will lose reception from time to time.

Hi Evan
I reported it here on EO forum back in August that a new 5" Model was being released.

Cheers

I just bought the current VN1 model, tested it, love it, but yes, from Hema themselves new VN5 model is coming out with a 5 inch screen and the ability to have a rear camera plug into it around Christmas and will retail at $990. Current model as stated above retails at $660. Not sure about the satellite issues with current model though.

The satellite problem sounds like BS to me, we live in Oz and would not be using European Satellites,

Doug,

The hardware is not just used in Australia.
from the HEMA site

"These days, Hema Maps publishes hundreds of map titles of their own and distributes an unequalled range of maps, travel guides, globes and other products around the world, representing more than fifty publishers. We have active sales representatives in every state and territory throughout Australia as well as international distributors that make Hema's maps available in more than 38 countries around the world."

If the hardware has issues in potentially one of the biggest markets (Europe) the it is sound business sense to change the hardware to a better product.

Tony
I seen Jack/S about European Satellites in that page,

Galileo is the equivalent European navigation satellite system, currently in design and test stages. It will offer highly accurate positioning services to nomad users. It will be interoperable with the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System (Glonass), the two other global satellite navigation systems.

Doug,

What I said is that "the hardware is not just used in Australia"

The reference URL states that HEMA maps are now available in 38 countries around the world.

"If the hardware has issues in potentially one of the biggest markets (Europe) the it is sound business sense to change the hardware to a better product."

I suspect that alleged Europe issues are around function with TMC and live traffic expected in Europe. Not Galileo.

You seem to be suggesting that HEMA should make 1 product for Australia and
one for the rest of the world?

In my view, if HEMA have potential to increase exports and sell into Europe and North America then they should take it.

I was told by a shop in adelaide that the screen will be 5 inches (I guess to compete with VMS) but they have also changed their manufacturer. Apparatnly Hema weren't happy with the build quality and they had lots of warranty claims so the new one will be built better also.

Good to hear that Hema are not happy with the reliability of the older units. Hopefully the new 5 inch ones will establish a reputation for reliability, something the older ones have not done.

Today got a warranty replacement for my late June 09 unit that failed while I was on holidays recently. It is charging as I write. Will try it out tomorrow. Looks to be a new unit ie not reconditioned, swapped or repaired. Took over a month and Hema did send an apology for the delay. My faith may be restored if the new unit actually works properly for more than a short time.

The new one I will treat cautiously. I will not plug it into a computer or remove the SD card if I can avoid it. I had a suspicion that there was some read memory error in my faulty unit. Strongly suspected faulty SD card or SD card connector or both.

If the new ones prove reliable might get one next year.

Just to clear up the confusion out there:

1. RRP of new HEMA 5" will be $990
2. Existing device did not track European Gallileo satellites but the latest SirfIV GPS chip in new device definitely does, plus is a 64-Channel GPS so locks faster and longer
