Hi Guys. Have a jayco 2005 Dove. With the fridge turned to 12v when towing
will it still operate when connected to the car even without a battery in the van. Thanks

depends on how it's wired up and if your car has a 'hotwire' installed. Most likely (but that's an assumption!) it will be wired to work off the trailer plug but your car will need power to the matching pin on the car socket.

I should add, these fridges suck the power on 12V so don't leave it on connected to the car for very long (mine has a on/off switch in the car, or disconnect the trailer lead if stopping for awhile).

or have a relay fitted so it only draws from the car when ignition is on. So you'll need a power supply direct from the alternator (or second battery) and another supply from a source that is only live when ignition is on.

does your fridge have a vent to above the bench if it does it may not be recommened running it while the top is down as the haet may damage your walls where they fold over the vent area

I understand (ive lost my instructions) you can run them on 12v while folded down, but not on 240v (due to increased heat causing damage to the canvas). Remember - there is another external vent or two for the fridge to breathe - especially with moving vehicle airflow.

I always run mine (Jayco Eagle) on 12 volt when being towed. The canvas has not been damaged. I cant remember the Dove Layout - but in the Eagle the bed is above the fridge, not canvas. There is also an inch between the fridge and the bed.

Have fun.

If its got 12V on the fridge and never had a battery setup, I would imagine yes.

You need to chech your car wiring is setup for it at the plug as mentioned above. Just use a test light on it and see if the pin is always on/active with the ignition off, or is it only with ignition on? If its active, get someone next to fridge and plug it in, you may hear it turn on (simple way of checking its working on 12v off car)

i suggest you upgrade the cable size too so it keeps it cold. It may work but will probably struggle. Maybe even on 240 it will struggle? If so install a fan (computer type ok) at top of vent to blow air out - it sucks the air flow thru.

If the car trailer plug pin is always active, it would be better to instal a switch as mentioned elsewhere to turn it off when you dont want it on (when the van is connected) to save your car battery. Another way is simply to disconnect the plugs :)
