Hey guys,
Struggling to locate a more scenic way from
Canberra to
Melbourne via a lot of dirt, with some great locations for
camping along the way. This is for next week :)
Towing a camper trailer, has reasonable clearance, not full offroad but will take a bit.
Any suggestions on a route ?
This is part of a longer journey I am undertaking, just struggling with this part.
Any help is really appreciated.
Regards,
Flux.

Hi Flux. For starters head into Namadgi NP and on to
Adaminaby. Then to
Jindabyne and down the somewhat hairy Barry Way.
Camping spots galore along it.e.g. Pinch River. Once into Vic turn right onto
Limestone Rd and head to
Omeo,
camping at the aptly named Native Dog Flat where the dingoes will howl. If you don't like canines then Native Cat Flat is nearby!... Warrie

Pretty easy one Flux
Head down to Cooyong Benambra road towards
Omeo, then for some easy dirt go via Mt Hotham and across the
Dargo high plains to
Dargo down to Highway one.
There are other great paths as
well but this one will allow you to move in an out of dirt tracks as you wish with plenty of opportunites to stop ,
park the camper for a day and play around in tracks as scenic or tricky as you wish.

I think the roads open November 1, but
Canberra to Thredbo via
Cooma, keep going down to
Tom Groggin, ford the Murray, and head to Benambra.

Wonderful opportunities for an exciting trip! Suggest travelling via Thredbo (and yes, definitely go via Namadgi) and down to cross the Murray at
Tom Groggin (terrific
camping). Then on to the
Davies Plain track and through to
Omeo and
Dargo and so
forth. It can be terrifying - narrow tracks on extraordinarily steep hillsides. Our advice is not to rush. You might encounter fallen timber on the track. We encountered two cars that had hit head on on a narrow bend on the edge of a precipitous
cliff. Took quite some time and careful manoeuvring to separate them! One vehicle was full of
young Irish backpackers - very cute but not very savvy!
An alternative to the
Tom Groggin route is to turn off west just south of Suggan Buggan - have a look at a good map!
Suggest you get "4WD Tracks of the High Country" by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage - published by Boiling Billy.
Have fun.
