Melbourne good quality thermal balaclavas preferably the ones with just two eye holes,my son is in Afghanistan and he reckons its gone from 35deg nights to -5 in the past month and expect less in the next month, aus defence force gear is good for about 5deg,he's got good thermals i sent him but reckons a balaclava would be great. thanks

Why don't you try Kathmandu, Paddy Palli, Mountain design, Anaconda or the out door stores. Most of them have a store in Little
Bourke between Elizabeth Street and Queen Street. Kathmandu is in
Bourke just up from Elizabeth. Also a Paddy Pallin on the Maroondah Hwy at Ringwood. They'll have what you're looking for.
Cheers Mick

Alright then 23deg F of frost I should have said..
Cold enough that you dont lick a metal bar anyway. And the money in the milk bottles was sitting in ice in the bottom.
:-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Hi Denidoug,
Agree a good outdoor
shop. You might also try a good ski
shop - if possible, try to get a silk one. I've used them skiing in Canada in very cold conditions (ie -20C plus) and they're pretty good. The silk is very comfortable to wear and not bulky. Sounds funny when you hear "silk", but have a look if you can find one and you'll see what they're like.
Cheers, Mark.

I'll be watching for a reply here also barb...our DIL's brother is off about the same time as
well, may even be with your sons outfit. Big culture shock all round from Oz tropics to Afg that time of year. They'll get plenty of off road and desert driving and
camping while their up there, just the wildlife's a bit different LOL.
It would appear the ADF's issued equipment hasn't improved much over the years :-(

thanks guys managed to get some from a mate who crews on aurora australis down at
hobart just managed to catch him before he went to casey, today, thats the sort of gear i was after not your average thermal gear, i have used this gear on syd/
hobart races.yeah the ADF issued gear is rubbish most of his mates have bought gear on line had it sent home and readdressed to afghanistan, can't get this gear online though, hate to put a dampener on it but your boys are in for a huge change when they get there, conditions bad, food bad, weather bad, 4 week patrols, but they get through it,tell them to stay safe and we'reproud of them,8 months go quicker than you think.

Hi,
this is our son's 3rd deployment in the 3 1/2 years he has been in the army, he has been to East Timor, Iraq and now Afgahanastan. He usually buys some gear before he goes as he is not happy with some of the stuff provided so I will pass the info on. He has a baby due around the same time he leaves hope he gets to see it before he leaves
