I am in the process of decommissioning the 7x4 bush trailer, so to speak, after the trailer has done around 60,000km, some of it over rough patches of earth.
I had bought and set the trailer up in 2005 to carry 240lts diesel, 100lts
water and
camping gear to remote locations. I carried the diesel in 12 jerrycans and made a 16mm MDF storage system whereby the jerry cans lay on their side in 3 rows of 4.
Where
camping gear went I positioned some MDF dividers to hold the gear in place and then had 6 Bungi straps to hold it down.
All the MDF bits were held together with 50mm angle brackets and 12mm wood screws.
95% of the storage system is reuseable. Initially the MDF had cost about $150 for the trailer storage and the Nissan rear storage and I have re-invented the back of the truck no less than three times since then according to the needs of the proposed trip.
So storage systems do not have to cost an arm and a leg. You just need some time, electrical
tools and some inventiveness :-)

That is so true Willem.
I have not travelled with the same set up in the back of the car twice.
I have certainly got my money's worth out of that sheet of MDF. It has provided me with good versatile storage and all the entertainment of doing the design and frequent redesign.

It's a good feeling to have made something, used it for that purpose, and then get another change to do it all again.
We decided not to use a trailer after 2005 trip, but we do plain to travel with the CT or Van, set up a base
camp, leave it somewhere, lockup storage or something when we start to travel east again, on some longer trips.
Have fun with the next stage of the MDF's life...
Cheers
Richard
