Hi Guys,

I've tried using the search function on the forum, however when I type in something like Cooper Tyres I get a heap of different threads with a few on the search subject.

What am I doing wrong.

Thanks

:-) You and a lot of others - I find it bad when doing searches as well. I gave up searching for that reason - I go to Google.

If you know the posters name I found taht works, other than that best of luck you will need it. :-)

Hey there.

When you type in a search, enclose the words with quotation marks.
For example. "Coopers tyres"

This should help.

If you just typed in cooper tyres, you probably got every thread that contained the word 'tyres' as well as every thread that contained the word 'cooper' (even if it was referring to the creek or the beer)!

Try clicking on the HELP button on the forum - it is actually HELPful on this site!

The HELP is reproduced below:

The search supports AND, OR and NEAR boolean matches and " double quotes for exact phrase.

If you want to limit to a time frame ie: show me current threads in the last X days - then simply select/enter a date in the start date field along with your search terms.

Examples - ignore single (') quotes
'canning stock route csr' - the system will return results that match any of the words, so it will look for canning OR stock OR route OR csr.
'canning AND stock AND route' - will look for threads that have all three words somewhere in the thread.
'canning NEAR stock NEAR route' - will find all threads that have all words however the rank will be based on how close the words are together.
'"canning stock route"' (in double quotes) - will find all threads that have an exact match to the string.
'"canning stock route" OR art' - will find all threads with the exact match to canning stock route and will also find all threads with the word art.
'"canning stock route" AND art' - will find all threads that have an exact match to canning stock router and also have the word art in the thread.
'"canning stock route" NEAR art' - will find all threads with the exact match to canning stock route and rank results based on how close art is to string

I hope this helps - I only found out because I asked a direct question to the site staff, and got a helpful response - I can usually find what I'm looking for now! I hope you can too...

Good work guys and if you use the Site Search system at the top of the page it auto adds quotes around the search string - So give that a go also and you will be given the best 20 results to your search.

Richard - yes the fileswap system needs a bit of work - I started the other day however all the folders came back by themselves which is a concern to me. I need to convert this whole thing to aspx and will get around to this very soon.

Thanks DM,,

I've never used the search at the top of the page, that good, after trying 4-5 times?????

It wont work if you hit enter (for me anyway) you must use the mouse to tap the mag. glass..

The results are great,

Cheers

Richard,
The hit enter works on the home page so there must be something going on in subsequent pages that I need to investigate - I will add that to the task list also. Thanks.

Didn't even work on home page for me, same as above..

Not on any page, it searches but the gray drop down doesn't show.

Tonyb: I can never remember it either - I had to go back to my old emails to find Damien's reply to my 'searching question' only then could I reveal the mystery in this thread...

Richard: I don't mind you reproducing the text, but David might LOL! It's copied and pasted from the HELP on this site. You probably don't need to add it to the FILESWAP since you can access it just by clicking on the HELP button at the top of the forum page - perhaps this will help with tidying up the FILESWAP?! :-)

Yes, I know: Microsoft has conditioned most of us to ignore HELP buttons as they usually just tell us to do what we've been unsuccessfully trying for the last 1/2 hour or so, or how to do everything except what we want to do!

Thanks, this site has so much useful info but must admit I could never workout how to search these forums. It's the most confusing of about 10 forums I'm a member of..

Anyway will give it a try now

ss--ss Its probably the most confusing because its the biggest site with more info than all the other sites combined.

Use Google to find an answer about something travel or 4wd related and this site will no doubt come up in the top couple of search results.
More than 70,000 pages of info are now available to you on this site I would love to know another site that comes anywhere near matching that?

The search function works very well and can be extremely accurate when you get the description right and closed down to exclude the other possibles that result from too broad a search as described above.

I just think its a bloody brilliant one stop shop for those of us who travel if you want an answer about travel and 4wding in this country then its on this site.

Cheers

Hi Jeff,

Can't answer your question but it was me you were talking to today at Burpengary. Hope you found where you were looking to go. Nice meeting you, don't worry about the "Coopers" and stick to the B/Stones hehehe.

Cheers, Trevor.
