Can anyone suggest a quiet beach camping spot - either national park or caravan park (or even bush camping) in the Byron Bay area - give or take a few hundred kilometres.
We would like to be within walking distance of the beach and we have a Bushtracker caravan.

Thanks
Bob

We go to the South Ballina Beach Caravan Park. Cross over the Richmond River on the ferry in Ballina, or turn off the pacific Highway at Wardel. it is the second caravan park on the RHS. great park (IMHO), and with in 100 meters of the beach. 4WD access to beach (no permits). I have stayed there 4 times this year.

I agree South Ballina is a great place to stay, plenty of room, it has a bush landscape and you are allowed fires, when there is no bans, and as mentioned it is close to the beach with a easy approach on and off the beach, you can also have pets on the off season.

We have just spent the last 4 days at Pebbly Beach. 4WD only, and you need to go in 2 hrs either side of low tide.

Pebbly Beach is in the south end of Yuraygir NP. Camp area is 40m from the beach, with shaded areas and grass spots. Toilets, you need to bring everything else. Fires ok, some camp sites have BBQ.

Tony we often stay down the road at Corindi but I am often a bit concerned about getting stuck on the beach on my own if I tried to get up to Pebbly. So I have never been there,
Is it possible to tow a Camper Trailer up there if you go either side of low tide?
Is the beach run safe, no soft spots?

Thanks

Mark

Camper trailers should be ok. When we were there (4 years ago) there was of few caravans. Be wary that in busy periods the creek crossing gets deeper over time. Even at low tide it can cover your wheels.

And never try to drive onthe pebbles, you will get stuck.

HI Mark,

i usually worry about things like this and I thought you would like some support in choosing not to do it... conditions change rapidly, it would probably be ok, but is it worth the overall risk.

when we were there, pebble beach had a "ranger" who lived on site in a caravan. So it's highly unlikely that you would ever be there alone.

No problem getting a camper in there, as long as you watch the tide times.

Parks keep the exit track up the creek bank clear of ruts, so its no trouble getting in.

The soft sand before the beach requires low tyre's, the beach itself is as hard as with a bit of soft sand getting off the beach, but as your tyres are low already its ok.

the ranger couldnt clear the tracks this morning, then the dumptruck came through and a low moved into the south-east....

we don't have to prove ourselves by taking risks

Yogibob,

Try Broken Head Caravan Park

Just south of Byron Bay and right on the beach.

Cheers,

Broken Head CP is tucked into a little valley at the northern side of Broken Head and it's NP, bottom end of Tallows Beach 5km south of Byron. 50m from front of the small CP and you are on the patrolled beach!
Alternatively Lennox Head, riight across the road from the beach, on the shores of Lake Ainsworth, 15-20km south of Byron, 10-15km north of Ballina.

Both quieter than Balliina or Byron, yet a IGA within few hundred metres at Lennox and maybe a 1-2km to Suffolk Park for Broken head.
I have always liked the look of Brunswick Head & it's CP about 20km north of Byron, especailly now that the Highway bypasses the town, but are less familiar with it.

Depends if you want to be in a major town like Ballina with all it's facilities or somewhere a bit quieter.

Consider Brunswick heads as well - seehttp://tinyurl.com/yzuvjf6 - The markers for "B" & "E" have slipped south a bit. Terrace Reserve "A" is just a short walk to the beach over a foot bridge. There are good camping sites as well as van sites.

Hi!
Try Brooms Head or Readcliff national park. Both right on the beach dont stay there very often as we live 10 minutes away but have been known to much to our kids amusement (you live there)

Quiet beach camping spots are very hard to find at Byron Bay.

There are many nice caravan parks in the area and you can see photos of them on my Caravan Park Photos website.

IF you are prepared to be 170km south of Byron, then Corindi Beach or Red Rock are outstanding if you want to be right on the beach in very quiet little villages. Both more or less surrounded by bushland, 45km south of Grafton, 40km north of Coff's Harbour.
Both basic council style CP.
You could also camp at Sheep station Creek in Yuragir (spelling?) NP, about 15km off the highway north of Corindi. Beautiful location, firewood, good shade, eco toilers but about an 800m walk to the beach, or you could drive the 3-4km detour to drive onto the beach. It is the take off point for Pebbly beach mentioned above
We were blown away with the beuaty of Standen River, a few km south of Brooms head east of Mclean, but we were turned off by the tent peg inside tent peg closeness when we saw it in January a few years ago.
Apologies if I have mispelt a few names.

Thanks guys and gals for all your wonderful suggestions.

Broken Head Caravan Park was our choice, but on ringing to book in we discovered that they only have a couple of sites suitable for our 19' Bushtracker which also has an extended draw bar. None of these sites are available until next week.

So we are currently staying at the Lake Ainsworth/Lennox Heads caravan park. It is lovely and quiet at the moment.

We checked out Broken Head yesterday and narrowed it down to one site only which we will move to on Monday - as it is our preferred park.

If time permits we will check out a few of the other suggestions on our way back to Victoria.

Thanks again everyone

We stayed at Broken Head in March with a 21ft van and the only site i could get it on was right beside the hedge facing down towards the bollards.

They tried to put us on a site down near them and I didn't have a hope of getting on it. They then had to take the bollards out so I could go around.

When it rained water ran right thru the site for two days.

Was not the best park we've been in sad to say.

Went for a walk up the headland track and I walked right past a snake.

Wife who is terrified screamed blue murder loud enough the people on the beach heard her.

Turned back and around next corner was a metre long green tree snake strolling across the track.

More hysterics

Needless to say she wasn't fussed on the place . ROFL

Nice beach though for your kids

Cheers
