A little while back, there was a post relating to A 55 litre Engel fridge in a Repco Brochure. When you go to the Engel web site this is what you are greeted with:

DO NOT BE FOOLED
Engel Distribution Pty Ltd wish to advise that the 55 Litre Portable Fridge/Freezer advertised in the current "Repco" Catalogue under the "ENGEL" Logo is NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM AN ENGEL PRODUCT"

At the time there was some debate about this product, but for once and all the matter is quite clear from Engel.

I bet the legal boys had a field day.

Cheers

I understand that Repco subsequently pulled both the ad and the product. Probably as you say, due to legal issues. Costly exercise, both in product cost and reputation.
cheers,
Gerry

Hi Gerry
It makes one wonder how it even passed the "Proof" stage, as someone would have had to proof read the layout before the final printing. It would have been a real talking point between their legal teams and would be very interesting for the final outcome.

Exactly, I wonder which bright spark at Repco came up with that brilliant idea. More to the point how it was able to be published!

Sounds like the portable fridge market might be following the UK vacuum cleaner market and the Aussie skid-steer-loader.....

In the case of the former, the term "Hoover" has become a generic term; even a verb (as in "I will spend the next 2 hours hoovering the house").

In the latter, everyone knows the term "Bobcat"...... but more than half of the skid-steer-loaders that people call a "Bobcat", are actually a different brand.

So, maybe we are seeing an approaching age where anyone who has a portable fridge (regardless of the actual brand), will refer to it as "the Engel".

Come to think of it, it even follows that many Yanky people who know bugga all about 4 wheel drives, refer to all 4bys as "the Jeep"......

Cheers

I can understand how "portable chilled beer receptacle" became known as the Esky, and why 12V transportable refrigerators are called Engels, and ball point pens are called Biros, and MP3 players are all called iPods, but Hoover escapes me. To Hoover something could mean to do something a senior CIA officer might do, or even dam a large river.

Bob,
Perhaps if you Google this subject, you could come up with some interesting data!

Hi Graham
It was nothing to do with the correct information that you posted, it was the fact that the advert had the Engel name and logo on it, when in fact it had nothing to do with Engel. That is when Engel put up the big notice on their home page.

Cheers

Yep I know . It looked sus tho as it didnt even look like one.

In the online catalogue you only had to run your mouse over the pic and the real name came up.
Your info confirms what we thought and the resulting court case may be interesting LOL
