THE number plate will soon be a thing of the past in the Territory.
New registrations will have two letters, followed by two numbers and then another two letters.
They will all begin with the letter C, which was allocated to the Territory by a national committee.
Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy said he would have liked the letter N, but that went to New South Wales.
The plates will still be made in ochre and white by prisoners at Alice Springs jail.
New plates are being introduced because the Territory numbering system is almost full with one million registered vehicles.
Most of the vehicles are no longer on the road but the Transport Department said it would be too time-consuming and expensive to reclaim old plates.
Mr McCarthy said the new plates would be issued within six to 12 months.
Personalised number plates - which are sub-contracted to a private company - will continue to be sold for $140, one of cheapest rates in the world.

Doug. " THE number plate will soon be a thing of the past in the Territory"

If number the number plate is going to be a thing of the past. How come there will be registration numbers, as you quote. I take it these numbers will be on Plates?

Apart from Personalised Plates the Nuber Plate has Numbers, 6 of em, when letters are added then it should be called a Licence Plate , so what the story implies is that the 6 numbered plate is going....

Don't richard love to announce when I copy and paste a story, almost as if it's a crime, he must sit and watch waiting to pounce like a little kid, oh and richard is spelt without a CAPITOL letter too ,

Doug. I was just at loss when you said. " Number plates would be a thing of the past. I was thinking like in the UK some year ago, they got rid of the plates and had a plastic sticker that went on the bonnet and boot. With Richard,
" He'll get there " Cheers...

"Licence Plates" are such an American term :-(

I guess it just further adds to the Americanisation of Australian terminology, SUV etc :-(

Hi get outmore, yes I remember those, we had them on our car before we came to WA, they had the little 'sa' (ontop of each other) in front of the numbers.

Cheers

I was interested in the Doug saying that the personal plates cost $140 as the NT must have the highest ratio of PP I have seen. Drive around Darwin for a while and I reckon the ratio would be 1 in 10.

We have had "number plates" down here with letters on them since Adam was a baby (Adam is my nephew).

Theyve always been called number plates and in my mind always will be.

I love the NT news, if its not some bloke escaping a croc attack by the hairs of his chinny chin chin, or some language challenged lady claiming she did not have oral dialogue while her partner crashed his car its something else hugely entertaining.

They would give the old Melbourne "Truth" a run for their money these days of they still printed it hahahaah

I disagree with you.

The truth was a far more professional paper than the NT times

I just hope they hurry up and get rid of the registration label. The last 3 haven't lasted more than 5 months.

Just like to mention that here in WA we will no longer have to scrape the old License sticker off the windscreen after December. Apparently the State Govt has decided that it will save them several hundred million Dollars a year, and instead have Police Vehicles fitted with the Automatic Number Plate Reader or Scanner , which is all fine and dandy, but what happens when you have paid for your annual six/twelve months rego and Mr Plod pulls you over and informs you that you are driving an unregistered vehicle. I for one will always have the receipt in the glove box as proof of payment. Recently my wife was pulled over and according to the cop she was driving and unregistered vehicle, she produce the receipt from the glove box. The Cop could not fathom why his computer was giving him a false readout. I can see huge problems with the new system until they iron out the bugs, and even then I doubt it will be perfect
