Hi All,
I’ve just seen this article from the ABC that suggests that Rabbit Flat roadhouse, on the Tanami, is going to close.
Hopefully not, but I guess Bruce and his wife have been there a long time, maybe they’ve decided to move on.
It may pay anyone relying on fuel from there to check before they head off.

According to the ABC item, apparently they (the owners/operators) are refusing to sell Opal fuel and the Govt. is continuing negotiations with them. What gives?

The way I read it is that the refusal to sell opal is not a problem because they will be closing. If they remain open then it will be a problem. I have no idea why they will not sell opal.
Maybe the fact that they have decided to close means it's not worth worrying about changing over to opal.

May be because fuel at the moment comes in from
Halls Creek.. and opel would have to come up from Alice.

Hmmm........ Maybe they will close to selling fuel. There is no restriction on selling grog, tucker and other stuff, however!
Bruce and Jacqui Farrands are more or less retired now and their chidren are operating the roadhouse. The Farrands are tough people, having braved all types of adversity over the years including a 'Take-over' bid by the Land Councils in the 1970's. Bruce, being a wily character, made a stand, beat off his detractors, and was left alone after that. Some of you might remember that!!!
Fuel is available at
Tilmouth Well Roadhouse,
Yuendumu Community and Bililuna Community and so Rabbit Flat isn't really an essential refuelling point.
Cheers

I think Bruce started making it clear earlier this year to anyone who stopped for a chat with him that he intends to close the business at the end of this year. He’s been there fifty years now and Jacqui has been crook for some time so I think he is making the right decision. He’s not far off seventy so it makes sense to me as a person in his age bracket.
He’s always made it clear that he will not sell opal and some months ago he was indicating that rather than get into a stoush over it he would simply stop selling petrol and sell diesel only. I gather this makes economic sense as the bulk of his sales are diesel anyway.

We had quite a chat with Bruce at about the end of June this year. At that time he was engaged in some lengthy correspondence with the relevant Federal minister about the (non)sale of Opal petrol from the roadhouse. He was being "encouraged" to sell opal but was expected to bear most of the cost of doing so. Given that his current petrol bowser was made not long after WW2 and would be difficult to upgrade his conclusion was that it made economic sense to simply stop selling petrol. Can't say I blame him.

FYI
The Australian Government pays the cost difference between unleaded petrol and opal petrol. The cost to the consumer is the same at the pump.
Before a petrol outlet starts selling opal the government also pays for maintenance on the pump and replaces the seals.
There would be no additional cost to Rabbit Flat selling opal.
He is one of the only outlets in the
Alice Springs Region that refuses to sell opal.
I have seen the effects of petrol sniffing and cannot understand why any outlet would refuse to do what they can to prevent this harmful practice.

Maybe he is just lucky enough to be one of the few people in business in this country who can tell the government to get stuffed & count me out.
Gotta respect a man who has self detrermination.

I can’t vouch that this is true as I heard it on a radio broadcast. The announcer said “ Bruce doesn’t think it is his problem". If they want to sniff it, that’s up to them.”

If those were Bruce's words i can only agree with his approach.
surprise, imagine making somebody responsible for their own actions.
governments would only need 1/2 as many people if they weren't introducing laws that penalise/inconvienience the bulk of the people because of the stupidity of a few they think need protecting
bring back darwins theory and let life( or lack of it) breed out the idiots.
I must say I found Bruce very knowledgeable and enjoyed a chin wag with him on my last stay at Rabbit Flat.

Fatso what a hypocrite you are, On one follow up you say good on him for standing up to the Gov on the issue of Opal fuel. then on this follow up you say ohh and please don't let it happen to my kids.
I hope your kids don't end up sniffing petrol.
I love the attitude of people that think it won't happen in their backyard, they generally end up crying foul.

Fatso,
in fact I have 3 children . oldest now in her 30'sand the mother of our first grandchild and the youngest 22.
fortunately we had no trouible with any of our kids in regard either drugs or petrol sniffing.
they were kept busy with education, team sports and part time jobs especially in their teeenage years.
they all work to support themselves and been brought up to respect others and other peoples property.
I hope you also have a trouble free runs with your kids. remember it is the parents who have to bear responsibility for their kids actions until the kids are old eneough to be directly responsible.
I dont believe in restrictions being placed on the majority of people because of the actions of a minority group.
regards
Howard
