To-Day i witnessed a short wheel base nissan patrol (petrol) tow a 30ft tri axle van up a very rough steep loose gravel track. He got about half way and came to a sudden stop ,dust gravel, and chit flying everywhere, It was then i thought. " NO WAY", is he going to get there!. Next minute he's off again with little wheel spin and got this van up into his property. When i asked him what went on ?, he grinned and said thats what air lockers are about!.
Very impressive i must say " Flamin Nissans Again"....LOL.
Cheers Axle.

Hey Willem
I said that for years about a winch. Now I have one. Next on the list is a pair of Air Lockers. Having had them once I am looking forward to getting them again, they just save so much time and effort.

Dunno Duncs
Maybe I am doing the softer option treks now but still do not see a need for lockers.
Couple of years ago we were tracking through the scrub and the fella behind me got stuck on a dune with both lockers engaged. I got over with my underpowered old oiler, no worries :-)
Big bikkies for limited application like I said before. But for you fellas who are still employed...
well.....go spend it...lol

Ihave to agree with you as I have been in some VERY off road situations and over the years although I have been completely bogged I have NEVER had to get pulled out by another vehicle(yet!) and have always been able to get going wiyh a high lift jack or some other brain power so I cannot yet justify the expense of diff locks or a winch----nice to have but does it really justify the expense?

Hiya Axle
Makes you wonder why he would allow that when he has lockers,Unless they are new or he is and he hasn't had much knowledge..Why not engage first ????

Lockers should always be used to get you OUT of trouble, not IN to trouble. ;-))

Sounds like he could have got himself in more trouble with the loss of traction he was having.
He was on his way to his property so one would think he knew the difficulty of the track.
Apart from track damage, sounds like he had some fun showing off!

I agree River Swaggie & nickb - I've driven effortlessly up hills in 4WD thinking "maybe I didn't really need 4WD for that hill" only to be followed by someone in a far more capable vehicle who wouldn't engage 4WD until he absolutely need it (ie. tried to see how far he could get in 2WD). Usually he ended up in such a mess that by the time he finally engaged 4WD, even that didn't help them out of his predicament (not to mention damage to track etc. and increased potential to fall over in some deep ruts)

In "The Old Days " we would just through on a set of chains and off we would go.
I have used my diff lock once. But would carry chains without the diff lock.

SO the guy with the tri-axle wanted to pose, that's why he stopped half-way up...
if the
hill is as described, wisdom would have engaged them at the bottom of the
hill
some people over-do thier 4x4 and get into more trouble more often, i know i do...
