could anyone exolain to me the difference between diesel and petrol common rail. i realise the pressure in rail is quite different. is the pump for the diesel in the fuel tank and electric or is it mechanicly driven, and external. buying a common rail patrol.. thanks for any info

bill, generally speaking the pressure generated by the pump for a "common rail petrol" is a lot lower than for a diesel because most (not all) petrol engines have the fuel injected into the intake manifold and therefore require a lot less pressure than for a diesel where the fuel is injected into the cylinder at or close to maximum compression pressure. The pump for petrol engines is quite often in the fuel tank and electrically driven while the diesel is almost always mechanically driven off the engine.

common rail diesel injects at up to 23000psi
Old school unit style and mechanical injection runs at180-400 bar

not sure about petrol injection, but that sounds a bit low (35-40psi)
Thats around the pressure of your garden hose?

Water pressure in Perth was 80 Psig they drooped it down so we didn't wast as much water.

Pressure we see is gauge pressure not absolute pressure

0 absolute = -14.7 psig

0 gauge = +14.7 psia

Petrol pressure is as Stuart says, in low thirties for fuel injected petrol patrols like mine.

40psi sounds about right for a petrol.
A std XR8 runs 2.8bar (just over 40psi)
Some run higher like the AU3 Pursuit (4.3bar or 62psi)
I doubt there would be many petrols running over 70psi
