g,day, i've recently bought a gu 2.8 turbo diesel. i pick it up tuesday. now ive read heaps of negative stuff about the 2.8. we bought it because it's the only new shape patrol in out price range 27000 . it has a good service history and drives
well. if anyone has got a 2.8 and thinks it's a good rig, pls give me some POSITIVE reports.if torques a problem then theres a chip you can put in to help with that. what sort of power or torque will the chip produce? tar jason(

Jason,
Do not worry. Im the proud owner of a 2000 gu 2.8 and have done approx 55,000km over 3 years and have recently added a Tvan which it tows as if its not there.
Plenty of extra weight ie,
water tank, dual batteries, shower, _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx ,fridge etc and we go anywhere the 4.2's go. Find it a bit sluggish round town but lets face it its 2 tonne vehicle not a buzz box.
Only 3 real problems ie. Leaking fuel pump (cured itself but they stripped it anyway). Blocked fuel filter 5000 km short of normal service (dirty fuel).and an oil warning light scare (wiring fault).
Would like a "chip" but its not really necesssary.
Turbo lag? whats that?
No low down torque? Use the gearbox and increase revs (its not a 4.2 so dont drive it like one)
Here endeth the lesson .
Just enjoy.
Cheers Bob

Hi JACE10,.
I am in the same boat, deposit down on a 98' GU and no car to go, cant wait to pick it up and get off the road agian.
A mate of
mine has had a UNICHIP fitted into his 2.8L and swears by it, BUT, best drive it yourself for a while and see if think it is necessary.
Have been on this site alot lately, and after plenty of
forum searches am happy with my yet to pick up purchase. The problem that I have heard/seen the most is that the clutch plate may be light for the job. But this may depend if it has/you intend to tow alot, _stay clear of fifth gear when towing_
Paid $24,880 for a DX 2.8 with 120,000km's on the clock, only extra a bullbar.
Cheers

Hi JACE10,
I had a 1998 GU 2.8, and sold it recently.
Was very happy with it - all round it was a very capable vehicle, and it ceratinly went anywhere we pointed it with no trouble at all.
My observations were that it was a little underpowered on the highway for overtaking etc - but that's to be expected, and the clutch went at 80,000kms. The car did some towing, and that may have lead to the early failure of the clutch - $1300 repair bill for a new clutch. Taking off on hills etc with large load/towing was noticeable also, and significant revs needed to be had before take - off, as previsouly mentioned not much torque down low, and a bit of turbo lag means you have to drive it accordingly.
Aside from those few things - great truck. Only real prblem apart from the clutch failing was a hose connected to the turbo somewhere splitting/coming loose which resulted in a very noticeable drop in power due to the lack of turbo. Amazing how you notice how much difference a turbo makes when you suddeny; lose it :-) Problem fixed by Nissan under warranty no questions asked.
Drive the car like a 2.8TDI should be driven, not as previously suggested like you'd drive the 4.2 and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it!
Have fun :-)
