Trailer Height above ground

HI Guys,

I have come to the conclusion as my family begins to grow (kids get older) the more crap we need to take. I recently loaded the old faithfull 6 x 4 but she was struggling to hold it all.

I am now going to build a new tandem trailer to hold it all, eventually motorbikes will need to come etc so i will plan for the future. My wife recently convinced me to buy her a new tent which we now have a huge canvas tent (must admit i am pretty happy with it) so there goes my camper trailer idea.

We have an R51 Pathfinder ST-L with no lift etc (yet). I want to mount a water tank under the trailer, what is the ideal height of the trailer above the ground? Do i need to put 4wd suspension under it or will rocker suspension with 16" Sunraiser or similar give me enough height as to not damage the tank when going off road a bit.

I have very little experience with a 4WD so where we go are not very difficult drives. But I would to be able to do the odd river crossing etc and try to limit the amount of water to get into the trailer and wet out stuff.

Am i dreaming or is this trailer setup possible. I have fitted the tank under my 6 x 4 as a temp measure but it does not have the best clearance.

I suppose dragging a large tandem is not conducive to 4wding but i doubt very much I will be doing anything too difficult.

Also off that topic, how do people go about leaving there camp site to drive tracks during the day. I would prob put my fridge back in the car but what bout other things, my concern would be go for a drive and find everything gone, etc jerry cans, kids bikes, chainsaw etc.

Thanks Bruce

Bruce,

How do you go about leaving your camp site now?

There is no way a tent can be secured. If you try to lock it up those who really want your stuff will just cut holes in it. If you are worried about the trailer, there are numerous locking devices available at caravan accessories outlets. Unfortunately none of them will stop a determined thief.

We keep our site tidy whether we are there or not but when I look back at it from the car as we drive away it always looks like we have left and won't be back for a while. An invitation to theives. Having said that we have only once lost stuff to theives and that happened early one morning while we were asleep in a caravan park.

As for the fridge.Mine stays in the car all the time. This has a number of advantages, it is always with us so if we do a day trip we have cold drinks and fresh food and it is always on a well charged battery. This is important in the bush but caravan parks can charge a fortune for a powered site. If we are in camp I park so the fridge is convenient to our kitchen set up, it's not hard.

Hi Dunc,

That's just the thing previously didn't leave the site, but now that we have a 4wd i would like to drive around a bit.

Yeah I guess a determined thief will take what ever they want. I don't have a problem putting the fridge in and out of the car if needed.

My concern is the generator etc, i guess i can chain it to the trailer.

Thanks for the reply guess i will just have to suck and see.
