I think the guy is looking for a bit of guidance

mate - they're a bit cheap and that's because they're not very good. The power output is pretty poor for an 80w. You should be getting between 4 and 5 amps max power not the 2.22 that these give out. You'd get that from a 40w panel for a similar price or less. Your best bet is to keep monitoring ebay esp. if you're a regular ebayer you'll know the routine. Look for the usual brands like Sharp or BP (which are a bit pricier than most but better quality) you'll really get what you pay for but if you're sharp enough you can get a pretty good deal on the branded names. Check out the going rate on retail websites first but expect to pay at least in the upper 500s for a decent 80/85 w panel. That's all off the top of my head as it's a while since I did any of this but look at the "buy now" prices and try to bid under that - otherwise you're paying top retail. Like I said it's a while since I did this so hope somebody else can give you something more specific.

Thats right. So connected in parelell they will give 4.44 amps. Cant complain about that !! Same as the bloke in the next post with gis $900 one !

That isn't strictly correct, if correctly rated a 40w panel should put out approx 3 and a bit amps at 25 deg C under load (connected to a battery etc). These panels (most of the ebay ones at the moment all seem to be from the same source) are all around 2/3rd's that. One ad also alluded to the fact that output fell dramatically as the panel heated up past 25 deg when out in the sun. So it does appear that they are not all that good as previous posters have indicated.
Connected in parallel the output should be over 6 amps if they are rated correctly.

make sure if buying solar panels keep with the big brand names BP Sharp Suntech Mitsubishi Kyocera was the advice when I went to a solar talk. the speaker had 6 different panels bought off ebay he showed were crap. people that bought them could get no joy or replacements from sellers

I didn't really explain what i was trying to say I suppose.
The charts at the link you posted are spot on "real world figures.
What I was trying to say was that the ebay panels are under spec to start with, real world figures for their 40w panel rated at 2.2 amps output under lab conditions would be lucky to be half that in normal use.

Jim "Best Off Road"s calcs are spot on.

2.2 Amps is about as good as it gets from any 40W panel rated at 18V.

If you divided 40W by 12v to get 3.3 then it explains why you see most panels out putting 2/3 of what you expect.

Correct, BUT what people need to learn is that Solar Panels are constant-current sources, NOT constant power sources.

If it puts out 2.2 amps into an 18 volt load, it'll put out 2.2 amps into a 12 volt load.

That's exactly what I did and as batteries are usually around the 12v mark then the panel should be putting out that amount.
I've got two 22 w panels in a suitcase arrangement that I've had for nearly twenty years that put out about 3.1 amps in full sun when connected to the battery. I've never checked current at the unloaded voltage.

I have an 80w solar it puts out 4.5 usable amps the type of panel is called Polycrystaline.
It cost me $900 it folds up with bag.

I got sold a Unisolar 64w because I did not know anything. thankfully managed to onsell at little loss and bought a 120w panel Suntech panel same size. 64w was not enough power to run 40L fridge in winter. what I found out Unisolar dont work well in cold weather. 64w in cold weather would only put out 2.6a bloody useless in winter along the Murray. my mate has 85w Suntech and does not matter how cold charges 4.85a. under filtered tree light the Suntech would charge proportionately more than Unisolar

Must be a very very different Suntech panel to the 80w panel that I had ...if any sort of shade or cloud no matter how small got on mine it killed it stone dead...nothing, zilch , zero , no output whatsoever...up the Murray in May this year the Uni-Solar worked flawlessly , kept a 40l Engel running no problems at all....it must be very different to the one you had...cheers

There is a worldwide flood of Chinese Solar Panels at the moment. Same OE manufacturers as the big names in many cases. ( ie chinese and cheap doesn't necessarily mean bad right now). It is made more so in Australia because the government cut the old solar rebate earlier than they originally stated and people were left holding stock.

I would just confirm that they aren't seconds and they should be fine. They are forecast to get even cheaper over the next 12 months.

At that price I don't reckon you can go wrong. It looks well put together by the photos and the specs seem OK (but I'm no electrical guru).

I also note that the trader has his address listed which always gives me more confidence when buying from Ebay.

Personally speaking, I would ask the seller some questions
Ask .. for the specific panel manufacturers name
Ask .. if the panel is branded with it's specifications on the back
Ask .. who's responsible for the 25 year warranty?

Most people who buy their 'first' solar panel think it's absolutely fantastic and will give it a fantastic endorsement simply because they now 'own it' and have had no previous experience and nothing to judge the panel against, except maybe a gennie.

A 'reasonable' 40 Watt panel should give an "output" of ~2.3 Amps
A 'reasonable' 80 Watt panel should give an "output" of ~4.8 Amps

If the nominated "output" is much below the numbers above I think it's a waste of money

If you have a look at the history (Items sold), it appears he originally had 'em listed at $429.. The 1st two (of this lot) were sold at that price...

My guess is that sales may have been a bit slow, so he dropped the price to gain some price advantage over his competition (of which there is plenty!)..

Then, in the last few days, no doubt due to this thread right here, demand picks up, and they're flyin' out the door, so he has put the price back to where he originally had it...

That's my take on it....
